After a long offseason that featured plenty of changes, the NFL is finally back. It has been a grueling wait for some, and the sense of intrigue and anticipation is as palpable as it has been for any season. This Thursday, we are gifted a wonderful game between two of the best teams in the NFL. Here are our best bets for the season opener between the Los Angeles Rams and the Buffalo Bills.
Bills @ Rams spread pick: Los Angeles +2.5
Are we sure the Bills are this good? After an 11-6 season where they lost in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs, the Bills have been getting hype as a Super Bowl favorite. While they are definitely a talented team with one of the best quarterbacks in the world, Buffalo may be slightly overrated. That especially rings true in this game where the Bills will be flying across the country to play the reigning Super Bowl champions — and they are still favored. We don’t buy it.
For as good as the Bills are, the Rams may be better. Of course, they won the Super Bowl last year and didn’t really lose anyone from that squad. The Rams are once again set up to compete for a title and they definitely have the talent to win it again. While this Week 1 game doesn’t eliminate either team from Super Bowl contention, the Rams appear to be underrated and they should be motivated by not being favorites. They were the best team in the NFL last year and we expect their success to carry over to this season. It’s going to be a great game and we are on the Rams.
Los Angeles Rams +2.5
Bills anytime touchdown pick: Josh Allen
Josh Allen is a game-breaking talent under center. The Bills signal-caller has established himself as a great QB and also an elite athlete. He has had at least six rushing touchdowns in all four of his NFL seasons and he’s been the Bills’ most consistent weapon on the ground in the red zone. In this game, the Rams should be able to contain the Bills’ running backs with relative ease as they have one of the best defensive lines in the league. This will lead to Allen taking matters into his own hands around the endzone and scoring it himself. He has proven he is capable, and the +140 on offer at Bovada is a great number to bet on it.
Josh Allen anytime touchdown
Rams anytime touchdown pick: Allen Robinson
The talk of the Rams’ camp has been the resurgence of Allen Robinson. He was one of the best receivers in the NFL prior to last season, where it appeared he quit on his former team, the Chicago Bears. Now, he has a fresh start with the Rams and he will be their second passing option. In turn, LA’s top receiver, Cooper Kupp, will get the most attention and Robinson will be able to feast. In this game, the Bills do not have a great secondary and Robinson will get open a lot. Expect the Bills to try to lock Kupp down around the endzone and let Robinson play one-on-one against the Bills’ corners. Robinson should be able to win that battle and come down with a touchdown in this contest. At +127, it’s well worth a bet.
Allen Robinson anytime touchdown
Bills @ Rams over/under pick: Over 52.5 points
This game should feature a lot of points. While 52.5 is a large number, this game could become a shootout and hit the over with ease. The Bills and Rams were both top-10 offenses in points per game last year and they should both have prolific offenses once again. While they both have pretty solid defenses, we have seen good offense beat good defense in the past and that should be the case in this battle. Even if this bet isn’t looking good at halftime, both of these teams have big-play potential and the over could hit in a hurry. It’s a big number, but it’s set up to be an entertaining opener to the NFL season.
