This follows the Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Bill 2019, which was passed at the tail-end of 2019, and aims to modernise aspects of the original 1956 draft and the Gambling Control Bill 2013, which receives further updates. Popular sports to bet on in Ireland
Ireland has a vibrant sports betting scene surrounding both local sports such as Gaelic Football and Hurling, and the bigger international sports such as horse racing, rugby and football. This section will highlight the five most popular sports to bet on in Ireland:
-
Football betting
Football, or soccer as it’s also known, is insanely popular all over Ireland with the League of Ireland Premier Division the top division. Great interest is also held in the English Premier League in Ireland, with many Irish players playing in the various tiers in England. you will struggle to find an online bookmaker that has a Irish Remote Gambling License that does not have football betting available.
-
Gaelic Football betting
Uniquely Irish, Gaelic football is a non-contact ball sport, that has some similarities to soccer, but also has plenty of similarities to rugby. An extremely skilful game, Gaelic Football, notably the All Ireland Championship, is available to bet on at most online bookmakers in Ireland.
-
Hurling betting
Estimated to be close to 4000 years old, Hurling is another game with deep Gaelic or Irish roots. A game that could only be described as violent, hurling is still very popular in Ireland and IE betting sites are likely to have markets on the All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship.
-
Horse racing betting
Horse racing is one of the most popular wagering pastimes in Ireland, and the Irish have some of the best, with trainers like Dermot Weld known all over the world. Some horses in Ireland are as feted as top sportspeople. Betting on horse racing can be done at most of the top online bookmakers in Ireland.
-
Rugby betting
Rugby Union is a mainstay of Irish sports betting, with the Irish national team known as the Lelos. The Pro 14 is the top domestic competition in Ireland, while many of the top Irish players play their trade in England and France. All of the best online bookmakers will have rugby betting markets.

Free bets for Irish punters
One of the best things about betting online is the free bet and bonus bet offers that are available, with these including genuine free bets, where you have to make no deposit to place a bet. Other types of bonus you can receive at Irish betting sites include deposit bonuses, where the bookie will match you deposit Euro for Euro up to a certain amount, meaning your initial deposit doubles.
If you’re new to online betting you can sign up to one of the above sites and take advantage of the offers. Paddy Power offers up to €30 in free bets when you bet €10, while William Hill offers €25 in free bets when you wager €25.
Take a look at all the offers to determine which bookie offer is best for you before signing up. Be sure to read the terms and conditions when choosing an offer – Paddy Power’s offer only works with a credit card or PayPal deposit with the free bets available for 30 days, while William Hill requires a minimum of €5 wagered and the free bets to be used within seven days.
These are just two examples of the many betting bonus deals that are on offer to Irish punters, with most IE online bookmakers having some form of incentive to open new accounts. These free bet deals do have wagering requirements attached to them, which means you can’t simply claim a free bet and then cash it out as real money. Often EU free bet wagering requirements can be very restrictive, so be sure to read the fine print before accepting any bonus offers at the best online bookmakers.
How to bet on sports and racing in Ireland
The saying “the luck of the Irish” wasn’t invented because the country offers a regulated online gambling environment, but we don’t see why it can’t apply. The island located in the North Atlantic has a population of almost five million and provided you’re over the age of 18 you can have a punt at a number of secure bookmakers.
Ireland’s currency, the Euro, is widely available and the Irish can try to win a pot of gold by having a flutter at some of the world’s best-known bookmaker brands.
The verified bookies offer 1000s of markets on hundreds of different sports and events, including Ireland SFC Betting, horse racing, greyhounds, EPL, cricket and even novelty betting.
Sports betting is legal in Ireland, both online and off. Under the Betting (Amendment) Act 2015, which is an extension of the Betting Act 1931, licensed online bookmakers and betting intermediaries can offer their services to the Irish. The laws make Ireland one of the most unrestricted countries in the world when it comes to gambling. Wagering on horse and greyhound racing is also legal and popular in Ireland.
The biggest and best online bookmaker for Irish punters is Paddy Power. It is based in Ireland and operates the country’s largest telephone betting service. The bookie offers a huge range of sporting matches to bet on, as well as spread betting. There’s also a number of offers for Irish punters to take advantage of which we explain below.
Other betting sites are detailed in the table above, and all offer a huge range of sports markets, horse racing and greyhounds to bet on. The best betting sites in Ireland will also have live streaming available, including the local and International thoroughbreds, tennis, basketball and much more.
When you sign up to the bookmaker you can set your location as Ireland – ensure you put in the correct address as you will have to do an identity check to make a withdrawal and it will need to match. You can then select your preferred currency as EUR and make your first deposit. There’s a wide range of options for Irish bettors, which we detail below.

Irish bookmaker deposit guides
- Paypal betting sites
- Visa betting sites
- Visa Electron betting sites
- Neteller betting sites
- Skrill betting sites
- Bank Transfer betting sites
- Paysafecard betting sites
When it comes to funding betting sites there’s a variety of deposit options to suit all different punters. Web wallets are quite popular for gambling transactions as they allow for punters to keep track of their funds.
PayPal is available in few countries for online gambling transactions, but due to Ireland’s gambling laws, the popular web wallet is available to use. You can create an account in just minutes and fund it using a credit or debit card, bank transfer or another available method. Then use your email address for the PayPal virtual wallet and the self-generated password to make a deposit. The funds will appear immediately in the bookmaker account. You can also use the service for withdrawals which can be processed within four hours.
Neteller and Skrill are both alternative e-Wallets to PayPal which operate in the same manner. You may not be able to use these services on a mobile device – check with the bookmaker. Paddy Power doesn’t accept Neteller and Skrill deposits on smartphones or tablets, but it does accept PayPal.
Debit and credit cards are available and a great option for quick deposits once you’ve stored your card – you can enable a feature where you only have to enter the three-digit security code on the back of your card. Visa and MasterCard are both available to use.
You can also opt for bank transfers – ideal for larger limits – and prepaid methods such as paysafecard or a Cash Card service. There’s also newer options including Pay-by-Phone services such as Boku and Ximpler and Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency which does not require a middleman and is incredibly secure.
All of the secure bookmakers listed above also have a helpful FAQ section where you can find out more about each payment method and approximate processing times for both deposits and withdrawals.

Mobile sports betting in Ireland
The best Irish betting sites are keeping up with the times by optimising their services to be compatible with smartphones, tablets and other portable devices. You can either visit one of the above Ireland online bookmakers via your mobile browser, or you can follow the links and download an app to your Apple or Android device.
Most of the top betting sites have Android and iOS apps, with it estimated more than 65% of bets in Ireland being placed by mobile. The rest of us will have to suffice by betting via the mobile websites, which as long as you are betting with a good online bookmaker will be an outstanding service, if slightly more stripped back. For instance, some of the best online betting sites may not have live streaming via their mobile site, but will have via their apps.
The apps and mobile sites are easy to use, with icons indicating popular betting markets and a list of all wagering options you can tap on. You can create an account on your mobile device and make deposits, plus withdrawals too.
The betting markets available on mobile mirror those on computer, with it possible to bet on various sports, horse racing and other codes, entertainment and event politics while you are on the go.
Apple phones operate on the iOS operating system, which does not allow you to download apps from “non-market” sources. This means to download a bookmaker’s app, you will have to do it via the Apple App store. But we always recommend creating a new account at the bookmaker first, so you can take advantage of the exclusive sign up offers that come with doing it via BettingPlanet.com.
Android users are less restricted than their Apple counterparts, with these types of phone allowing you to, after you have changed the setting, download “non-market apps. This means after you have created a new bookmaker account, you can download the Android app on your mobile device. Because these apps don’t have to be vetted before being offered to the public, be sure that you wager with a licensed betting company, rather than an illegal betting site, that might have a glitchy app.
Overall the betting experience on mobile phones and tablets is improving all the time for Irish punters, and we can’t see this changing anytime soon.
History of sports betting in Ireland
Gambling has been around in Ireland for many years. The Betting Act 1931 was the first piece of legislation enforced and retail bookmakers became regulated. Then came the Gaming and Lotteries Act 1956 which made sports betting and lotteries legal, but casino gambling was banned.
The Irish were smart and found a few loopholes which allowed for private clubs with casino services. As a result, when casino gambling did become legal big brick and mortar venues failed to compete with the clubs.
Betting shops are incredibly popular in Ireland but one distinct difference between Irish and the UK betting shops is the Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBT’s). FOBT’s are machines where punters can bet on slots, casino games and other electronic gaming options. These aren’t available in Irish betting shops, as they are in the UK.
As online betting sites have become increasingly popular, the Gaming and Lotteries Act 1956 was slammed for being outdated. As such the Betting (Amendment) Bill 2015 was drafted and is still enforced today. It requires online bookies to get approval in Ireland even if they aren’t based in the country. The Irish Government has declared they will be setting up their own gambling regulator, although it’s estimated that this won’t be live until early 2021.
This means in the interim the best Irish betting sites for 2019 are those in other countries, but do hold Remote Bookmakers’ licenses in Ireland and pay tax in this country. The future plans for Irish online betting sites are likely to be a further boon for the economy, given it is likely licensed online bookmakers will have to have a physical address in the country.
Sports betting laws in Ireland
The first piece of legislation that was introduced surrounding sports betting was The Betting Act 1931, which meant that betting shops were required to get a license to operate. Twenty-five years later the Gaming Lotteries Act 1956 came in effect, which legalised sports betting and lotteries, but outlawed casinos, severely impacting the illegal gambling dens that had popped up all over Ireland.
In 2013 the Betting Act was looked at it was decided it needed an overhaul to keep up with online betting and explosion of betting sites targeting the Irish jurisdiction. This lead to The Betting Act being updated and eventually requiring online bookmaker to have a license, for the first time in Ireland. This meant that the offshore betting sites targeting Ireland were now paying tax.
This has been maintained for a number of years, but Ireland is set for another major change in its policing of gambling, with the formation of its very own regulator, to take over from the existing body, and take laws into the future. It is expected the regulator set up in Ireland will be similar to the United Kingdom and require sports betting sites to receive a license to operate. We have seen other countries, like Sweden re-regulate, their market and it’s likely something similar will happen in Ireland, when the new regulator opens for business, which is unlikely to be until mid 2021.
