Season over for USMNT and Borussia Dortmund star Gio Reyna

USMNT and Borussia Dortmund player Gio Reyna has suffered a muscle injury that will end his club season. While he may be able to return for the FIFA World Cup this winter, it is still a brutal loss for both club and country.

The 19-year-old midfielder is one of the brightest stars in world soccer. Unfortunately, injuries have restricted game to only 13 games across all competitions this season.

Reyna has dealt with a lingering hamstring injury that he first hurt during a World Cup qualifier with the US against El Salvador. Since then, he has aggravated that injury on two occasions, and this last one will keep him out for an extended period of time.

Reyna’s best season so far came when he was a 17-year-old and was able to bag 11 goals across all competitions. He and Dortmund teammate Erling Haaland put world soccer on notice and established themselves as two of the best young players in the world.

Dortmund currently sit in second place in the Bundesliga, and while it was unlikely they could have caught first-placed Bayern Munich anyway, now it looks downright impossible.

Reyna is an important player for Dortmund but an even bigger piece of the US Men’s National Team. He is part of the US’s golden generation and a group of players that have US fans excited about the Qatar World Cup this winter.

The US are currently +10000 to win the World Cup, and while a healthy Reyna would make the Americans better, it would still take a miracle for them to win it all. There are reasons for optimism, however, and the USMNT have a good squad that can make a deep run. While it’s not worth throwing money on them to win, the US should be able to make it out of the group stage and excite their supporters.

Reyna’s health will be a big factor this winter as he is likely the most important player for his country. If he can come back and play a sustainable amount of time, he can turn his season around. At this point, he is slated to miss a lot of time and, therefore, lose some important games for his development, but the talent is still there. While this injury is brutal, Reyna is still someone to be excited about and should become a household name moving forward.
