Guinea – +490
Algeria’s quest for a long-awaited second continental title continues this Sunday night in Cairo when they play Guinea in the knockout phase of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Having beaten Kenya and Senegal to secure a place in the last 16 with a game to spare, the Desert Foxes flew to the top of Group C with a 3-0 drubbing of Tanzania. Adam Ounas of Napoli put up a Man of the Match performance against the Taifa Stars, as he struck twice and set up another to ensure Djamel Belmadi’s side would not have to face another group winner in the first round of knockout games.

The Monday night victory is thus far the biggest win in the tournament for Algeria, who can extend their unbeaten run to 10 games when they take on Guinea this weekend.
Unlike the North Africans, who had a smooth ride into the last 16, luck played a huge part in Guinea’s advancement into the knockout phase. Despite finishing third in Group B on four points, two points behind Nigeria in second and three points behind surprise group leaders Madagascar, the Syli Nationale squeezed their way into the last 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams.
Guinea’s final match of the group played a pivotal role in guaranteeing their progression. Burundi’s Christophe Nduwarugira received a straight red card 12 minutes in having committed a foul as the last man. This proved to be the opening the Elephants needed, as they scored two unanswered goals either side of half-time through AJ Auxerre forward Mohamed Yattara.
Algeria AFCON 2019 team news
Coach Belmadi looks set to revert to his strongest side on Sunday, having made nine changes to the starting 11 for the match against Tanzania with qualification already secured. This means the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Baghdad Bounedjah and Sofiane Feghouli will slip right back into the team against Guinea. Adam Ounas could maintain his place, however, after the 22-year-old put up a brilliant individual performance against Tanzania.
Guinea AFCON 2019 team news
Guinea will greatly miss the services of Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita, who has withdrawn from the rest of the tournament. This comes after his recurring adductor injury, one sustained during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, was aggravated during Guinea’s 1-0 defeat to Nigeria. Mohamed Yattara should, however, maintain his place further up the pitch after netting twice in his last outing.
Algeria vs Guinea AFCON betting predictions
Algeria to win – -142.86 at Bovada
Algeria to win both halves – +410
Along with Morocco and hosts Egypt, Algeria are one of three teams that still hold a 100% record at AFCON 2019. Their efforts in the group stage have seen the Desert Foxes firm to +800 at Bovada to lift the title, behind only Egypt (+333) and Senegal (+400).
Guinea have an impressive record against Algeria, with three wins, two draws and a defeat in their last six meetings. That is, however, a record they have amassed over many years, so it does not hold much water when talking about their chances at this tournament.
Given how the Syli Nationale have lost their last five matches against North African opposition, it seems highly unlikely that Paul Put’s charges will trouble the imperious Algerian squad.
