2020 Sony Open Hawaii golf betting odds, picks & predictions

Sony Open Hawaii golf betting tips

Matt Kuchar will look to defend his title this week at the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii, which kicks off Thursday, January 9 at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. The 41-year-old Floridian is rated a +2500 chance at Bovada and faces stiff competition from several of his Presidents Cup teammates.

Justin Thomas is the +550 outright favourite after winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua last week. He came up trumps in a three-way playoff that featured Patrick Reed, who holds the second line of Sony Open betting at +1200.

Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) heads an international contingent that also includes Im Sung-jae (+2500), Joaquin Niemann (+3000), Abraham Ancer (+4000), Marc Leishman (+4000) and Cameron Smith (+5000). All six of those players featured for the Internationals in last month’s Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne.

Americans have dominated the Sony Open in recent years, winning 10 of the last 11 editions. The Waialae layout is known to reward aggressive play, with each of the last seven winners shooting 17-under or better.

Sony Open 2020 best bets and predictions

Charles Howell III to finish top 10 – Howell has a solid record at the Sony Open, where he has finished in the top 10 in two of his last three starts. He also came within a shot of the title back in 2007 and within two strokes in 2012. Howell ranked seventh for greens in regulation last season, and that ballstriking form should serve him well this week.

Im Sung-jae for top non-American player – After taking out the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year gong and starring at the Presidents Cup in 2019, Im looks poised for another big year. The popular Korean plays without an ounce of fear and will look to take maximum advantage of every scoring opportunity around Waialae.

Justin Thomas to win outright – History shows that players who perform well at Kapalua often take that form to Honolulu the following week. Thomas did just that in 2017 when he won both titles and shot a record 27-under 253 at the Sony Open. After winning a star-studded playoff at the Sentry last week, the world no.4 will be hard to beat.
