Holger Rune will look to continue his impressive run through the 2022 French Open this Wednesday when he takes on Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals. We’ve got our pick in that match and plays for Marin Cilic vs Andrey Rublev, Darya Kasatkina vs Veronika Kudermetova and Jessica Pegula vs Iga Swiatek in this Wednesday’s French Open best bets for the quarterfinals.
Marin Cilic (+108) vs Andrey Rublev (-128)
Andrey Rublev was on the receiving end of a bit of a break in the fourth round as he was losing to Jannik Sinner before Sinner suffered an injury and was eventually forced to withdraw in the match’s third set. Rublev hasn’t exactly been in top form in this tournament, dropping at least one set in each of his first four matches.
Marin Cilic, meanwhile, has turned back the clock at Roland Garros with some outstanding play. He has lost only one set through his first four matches including a dominant 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniil Medvedev on Monday. Considering how well Cilic is playing and that he defeated Rublev in the last meeting between these two players at the Australian Open, the underdog is well worth taking a shot on in this one.
Marin Cilic to win
Holger Rune (+183) vs Casper Ruud (-213)
Casper Ruud hasn’t had the smoothest path to the quarterfinals with only one win in straight sets, but he’s gotten the job done and picked up a pair of solid wins over Lorenzo Sonego and Hubert Hurkacz in his last two matches. Ruud is a perfect 3-0 head-to-head against Holger Rune and has won all three of those matches in straight sets.
Yet despite Ruud’s head-to-head dominance over Rune, we aren’t ready to pick against the 19-year-old. Rune pulled off an upset with a 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 win over Denis Shapovalov in the first round, but his real splash in this tournament came in the last round when he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. We’ll play it a bit safe here and take Rune +1.5 sets, cashing in on either an outright win or simply if he pushes this match to a fifth set, which feels like a likely outcome.
Holger Rune +1.5 sets
Darya Kasatkina (-179) vs Veronika Kudermetova (+159)
Darya Kasatkina is looking like a very legitimate contender to win this event. She has not only won all four of her first four matches in straight sets, but she also hasn’t lost more than three games in any of those sets. Veronika Kudermetova has also played well in this tournament and did a nice job bouncing back from a first set loss against Madison Keys to win her fourth round match 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Kudermetova is no pushover, but this is Kasatkina’s match to lose. She’s the better tennis player, she has beaten Kudermetova before, and her current form is impeccable. The price is right to roll with the favorite to advance into the semifinals.
Darya Kasatkina to win
Jessica Pegula (+580) vs Iga Swiatek (-800)
Iga Swiatek is a powerhouse. She has won each of her last five tournaments prior to the French Open, and even on a day that she dropped a rare set to Qinwen Zheng, she quickly bounced back with a second set of 6-0 and a third set of 6-2 to advance. Jessica Pegula has played well to this point in the tournament and is also coming off of a comeback win in the fourth round, with hers coming against Irina-Camelia Begu.
There isn’t much money to be made on this match. Pegula is a pesky enough opponent to potentially steal some games and maybe even a set, so betting on Swiatek with a handicap at an expensive price isn’t all that tempting. But neither is betting against Swiatek in any capacity. Throw the world No.1 into a parlay with your other favorite picks, as she’s about as safe a bet as you can make in women’s tennis.
Iga Swiatek to win
