The 2022 US Open travels to Boston, Massachusetts, this week to The Country Club in Brookline. Ranked 40th in the world and 16th in the United States, The Country Club is an elite golfing layout that is sure provide a stern test in what is traditionally the most gruelling of golf’s majors.

Jon Rahm will be out to defend his 2021 title win at Torrey Pines, with eight other US Open champions lining up including Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Jordan Spieth. Rory McIlroy will also take his place in the field after defending his Canadian Open championship last weekend in Toronto.

Rain and thunderstorms are set to wreak havoc in the north-eastern part of the United States, so don’t be surprised if there are some delays and interruptions throughout the four rounds.

A par-70 from the black tees, The Country Club measures 6740 yards (6160m) in length. While it may lack length compared to most courses on the pro tours these days, it makes up for it with narrow, winding fairways and small greens. This will make accuracy from the tee and finding greens in regulation imperative for a player to be crowned champion.

McIlroy is leading the scoring average on the PGA Tour this season with 68.8 shots per round, as well as being in the top five for driving distance and strokes gained from tee-to-green. Justin Thomas will be another man to keep an eye on, as he has already chalked up nine top-10 finishes this season and boasts the second-best scoring average on tour (69.1) while leading in strokes gained from tee-to-green. McIlroy (+225) and Thomas (+275) are both well backed to finish in the top five and look like great chances of doing so.

Sungjae Im of South Korea will be one to watch this week. He ranks in the top 30 for driving accuracy percentage and inside the top 10 for greens in regulation. Paying +400 to finish inside the top 10, Im is a great value play given he has finished there in two of his last five starts (including The Masters) without missing a cut in that stretch.

Koepka has publicly stated that he doesn’t care about the tour he plays on, saying “I just care about majors” on Twitter. Koepka’s appetite for the big stage is matched only by his ability to play on golf courses that feature bentgrass greens, where history shows he’s in the top five players in the world for strokes gained since 2014. At +400, Koepka is another great value play to finish in the top 10.

If one man is to be singled out as the leading chance to win the US Open outright, it’s McIlroy. His statistics in scoring average, driving distance and strokes gained from tee-to-green are incredible. Factor into the equation that he is third in the world since 2014 in strokes gained playing on bentgrass greens, not to mention his last-start win at the Canadian Open, +1000 is a great price for the world number three to win his second US Open and fifth major championship.
