Stuart Andrew becomes UK gambling minister in cabinet shakeup

UK sports minister Stuart Andrew

In an unexpected cabinet reshuffle by the recently appointed UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Sports Minister Stuart Andrew has reportedly been named the new Gambling Minister.

According to The Racing Post, Andrew will be replacing Paul Scully – who, despite his efforts, could not publish the much-awaited gambling white paper.

Andrew will be sixth minister to work on the long-awaited document.

The white paper, which contains details on the government’s plan for gambling reform, has been repeatedly delayed, much to the indignation of the gambling industry.

Scully was admired in the gambling industry, which right now does not know where it stands with the new minister.

Andrew, who became a member of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in September 2022, is known for his silence on issues pertaining racing and gambling.

Only thing of note against him is that he was criticised for accepting £1,961 worth of hospitality from Paddy Power at Wembley during the European Championships.

Andrew’s appointment is yet to be confirmed by the DCMS.
