Fanatics halt bonus bet promos at Ohio Casino Control Commission request

On Friday, Fanatics halted a promotion offering sportsbook bonus bets to customers for their merchandise purchases in compliance with a request from the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

The Fanatics Sportsbook is currently in the early stages of operation in Ohio and Tennessee, its first two states. The company recently attempted to link its newly acquired sports betting arm to its merchandising by offering buyers bonus bets.

Via the promotions, Fanatics encouraged customers to buy its merchandise online, and in return, they will receive sportsbook bonus bets. The customers were offered bonus bets of up to $500 if they decided to register at the sports book.

The promos were offered to only news Fanatics Sportsbook accounts and could only be accessed once. Customers were also provided a bonus bet to match the subtotal purchase of Fanatics merchandise to be used in the sportsbook.

The promotions caught some social media attention on Wednesday, and by Thursday, Ohio sports betting regulators had requested that it be discontinued. The commission’s spokesperson, Jessica Franks, revealed that having been made aware of the promotion, the regulators were “working to get it removed.”

The spokesperson, however, did not reveal the rule or regulation Fanatics violated by offering the promotion.

By Friday, Franks disclosed that Fanatics had halted the offending promotions and extended the commission’s appreciation for their compliance.

“Fanatics has ceased the promotion in question. The commission appreciates Fanatics’ attention in this matter,” she said.

A representative of the company also confirmed that they had discontinued the promotion at the request of the OCCC.
