Gareth Southgate has officially resigned as manager of England’s national soccer team after eight years in charge.
The news comes two days after England lost 2-1 to Spain in the final of EURO 2024.
Southgate took over the job in November 2016, leading the Three Lions to the 2018 semi-finals and 2022 quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup.
He also took England to the EURO 2020 and EURO 2024 finals, where they lost to Italy and Spain respectively.
Southgate made the announcement through a statement on the English Football Association (FA) website.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” he said.
“It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.
“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter.
“Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”
With a win rate of 59.8% from 102 games at the helm, Southgate has the third-highest all-time victories as England manager.
He is also the only England manager to have led the Three Lions to two major finals.
Following news of his resignation, several names have been shortlisted by the FA as potential replacements.
Bovada is paying +200 for Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe to replace Southgate, ahead of former Chelsea boss Graham Potter (+275) and England under-21s coach Lee Carsley (+300).
