UFC: Jones drops more hints that Miocic fight will be his last
UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has hinted yet again that he will retire following his upcoming fight against Stipe Miocic.
The 37-year-old has been getting hounded by interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall in recent weeks, with the Brit saying there is “no way on earth” that Jones would fight him, and that he will “retire Jones without even fighting him”.
In response, Jones has doubled down on his intention to fight Miocic next.
“From my point of view it seems like an amazing way to finish this good work I started so long ago,” Jones said via X on Wednesday.
“My focus is on Stipe.
“Best heavyweight of all time as of right now.”
Jones dismisses Aspinall’s claim to next fight
Jones also shut down Aspinall’s claim that he deserves to fight him next.
“There are fighters literally all over the world that think in the back of their mind I can beat Jon Jones,” he tweeted in reference to Aspinall.
“There will be no statues of you.
“Go out and win more, make your name greater, that is the only way you do it.”
There were strong undercurrents of retirement in Jones’ thread of tweets, with the American eluding towards Miocic being his final fight.
“I’m 37 years old now, I’ve kicked everyone’s ass,” he said.
“My job is to finish strong and make an amazing movie.
“Go join Tom Brady, Floyd Mayweather, and all the other retired bad asses.”
However, the heavyweight champion is keeping his options open to a fight against Aspinall, should the right offer come on the table.
“It feels good to know on the way out your sport was literally begging you to continue,” he said.
“You never know, maybe the UFC will offer me a deal I can’t refuse.”
Although there is not yet a date locked in for Jones vs Miocic, UFC bookmakers have the title holder as the moderate favourite.
Most bookies have Jones sitting around -200, while Miocic is at longer odds of +170 to win.
