Liverpool defeat Wolves 2-1 to claim top spot in Premier League

Liverpool EPL

Liverpool registered a deserved 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium on Saturday afternoon to go top of the English Premier League standings.

French defender Ibrahima Konate gave the Reds the lead at the end of the first half, only for the hosts to equalise in the 56th minute.

Liverpool were, however, awarded a penalty six minutes later after Nelson Semedo fouled Diogo Jota inside the box, with Mohamed Salah promptly converting to restore Liverpool’s lead.

The three crucial points helped Arne Slot’s men climb to the top of the league on 15 points, one point above champions Manchester City, who drew 1-1 with Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

The Liverpool boss remained level-headed despite leading the table early in the soccer season.

“I think everybody is realistic enough,” said Arne Slot.

“All the players have so much experience that they understand six games into the season doesn’t give you a realistic view on the league table. That is more like in 19 games then you can really feel, ‘OK, where are we?’”

“But of course it helps if you get some good results, especially if you bring in a new manager and a new staff and being a successor of such a successful one.”

Meanwhile, defeat leaves Wolves bottom of the league with one point from a possible 18.

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil felt his side deserved more from the match.

“The lads gave everything and we had a right go,” said O’Neil.

“It’s another game against tough opposition where we were us – we gave the best version of ourselves.”

“Gutted for the lads as they deserved something over the last few weeks against tough opposition, but there’s loads of stuff I love.”

Liverpool welcome Serie A side Bologna to Anfield on Wednesday in the Champions League, with online betting sites paying -500 for the Reds to defeat the Italians (+1353).

Meanwhile, Wolves will be away to 12th-placed Brentford next Saturday, and leading sports betting sites are backing the Bees at +102 to beat the visitors (+272).
