Tom Aspinall discusses Jon Jones’ legacy & UFC title clash

UFC star Jon Jones

Tom Aspinall, the UFC interim heavyweight champion, recently shared his thoughts on Jon Jones and the possibility of a unification bout, sparking significant debate among fans and pundits.

During an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Aspinall praised Jones’ remarkable career, which includes a 20-1 (1 NC) record and a historic reign as light heavyweight champion before transitioning to heavyweight.

“Jon is absolutely elite, and I agree he’s one of the best fighters ever. Potentially the greatest,” Aspinall said.

However, he expressed reservations, adding, “But he has failed a couple of drug tests, and to me, that rules you out of being the best of all time.”

Jones has faced multiple suspensions due to failed drug tests, though he has consistently claimed they were caused by tainted supplements. Aspinall was unequivocal in his stance, stating, “If you’re on PEDs and your opponent isn’t, that’s absolutely cheating in my book unless you’re both allowed to do it.”

Despite these concerns, Aspinall is eager for a fair matchup against Jones. “If he’s not using [PEDs] now, yeah, I think so. Absolutely,” he said, regarding the potential for a unification bout.

The prospect of a clash between the two heavyweights seems increasingly likely, with Aspinall revealing details of a backstage interaction with UFC President Dana White after UFC 309. “He literally walks into the room and says, ‘It’s happening.’ And he said, ‘It’s going to be the biggest fight in UFC history.’”

Nevertheless, uncertainty lingers over Jones’ commitment to the fight. “Nobody knows what he’s doing, even the UFC,” Aspinall remarked.

Aspinall emphasized that his priority is legacy, not monetary gain. “I don’t really care about money at this point,” he said. “What’s more important to me is unifying belts.”

As Aspinall’s rapid rise in the heavyweight division continues and Jones remains an enigmatic figure in the sport, the potential bout has already become one of the most anticipated in UFC history.

Fans and analysts eagerly await confirmation of the matchup, which could solidify Aspinall’s place among the sport’s legends and offer Jones an opportunity to further cement his legacy.

Currently, UFC sportsbooks have yet to release odds for a potential Jones vs. Aspinall showdown, with attention now focused on UFC Fight Night in Tampa on Saturday, December 14.
