Sinner eases past de Minaur to reach Australian Open semis
Alex de Minaur was comprehensively beaten by Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Australian Open on Wednesday night in Melbourne.
The top seed thrashed de Minaur 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in just one hour and 48 minutes, extending his dominance over the Australian to 10-0 on the ATP Tour.
De Minaur — through to his first Australian Open quarter-final and playing the best tennis of his career — had no answer to the power and precision of Sinner.
The defending champion took full advantage of below-average serving by de Minaur, winning 46% of receiving points with the No.8 seed landing just 51% of his first serves.
There were also no signs of the physical issues Sinner had displayed in his round-of-16 victory over Holger Rune.
“I felt like today was very great match from my side,” Sinner said.
“I served very well.
“Breaking quite early in each set was very important for me and for my game.
“For sure was the best match of the tournament so far.”
The beaten de Minaur echoed Sinner’s comments in his own post-match press conference, praising the Italian for his level.
“It’s been too many times playing him and seeing the same thing,” he said.
“I’m not even surprised anymore when I face him.
“Matches like these happen.
“He was bloody good tonight.”
The Aussie No.1 went on to explain that while his matchup with Sinner is challenging at the best of times, the cool, breezy conditions at Melbourne Park made it particularly difficult.
“Look, I’m going to be completely honest and transparent,” he said.
“It’s tough. Honestly, it’s tough going out there and playing someone like Jannik because, ultimately, I think there are a lot of factors that vary into the scoreboard today.
“But matchup — I think he’s probably my worst matchup, and you can see it in the head-to-head.
“In these types of conditions it’s even tougher to play against him.
“So you go out there, you compete. You try everything. You bring every sort of different look that you can.
“But in these types of conditions where it’s a little bit colder and you can’t really get the ball out of his strike zone, he can just unload and not miss. It’s tough.
“You know, I think if we’re playing middle of the day on a stupidly hot day, then that’s when you can see some errors come out, and that’s when you probably see Jannik not play at his best.
“But conditions like today, it’s tough to rattle him at all.”
Following the victory, top tennis bookmakers have shortened Sinner’s Australian Open title odds to just -200.
As a result, Novak Djokovic’s outright price has lengthened slightly to +300 at Bovada, ahead of Alexander Zverev at +600.
Sinner’s semi-final opponent, Ben Shelton, remains a heavy underdog to win the tournament, paying +3300 with Australian Open betting sites.
