du Plessis rejects Strickland’s striking challenge for UFC 312

Strickland v du Plessis face off

Dricus du Plessis has dismissed Sean Strickland’s proposal for a striking-only contest in their UFC 312 middleweight title fight, set to headline the February 8 event in Sydney.

The South African, who is favoured at -188.68 to win the bout with the top online casinos, firmly rejected the idea, reinforcing his status as a well-rounded MMA fighter capable of adapting to any scenario.

Strickland’s call for a stand-up-only battle came earlier this week, where he publicly challenged du Plessis to avoid grappling and “stand up like men.” However, du Plessis, who secured a split-decision victory over Strickland in their previous encounter in January 2024, refused to entertain the suggestion, calling it absurd.

“If you want to make pacts about us just standing up, go do boxing,” du Plessis responded when asked about Strickland’s proposal.

“MMA is about versatility. I’ll do whatever the moment calls for – striking, grappling, or takedowns. That’s what this sport is about.”

Despite dismissing Strickland’s demands, du Plessis acknowledged that their rematch would likely remain standing for much of the fight.

Their initial encounter was heavily striking-focused, with du Plessis using superior cardio and movement to edge out the decision.

“I expect this fight will be similar,” du Plessis said.

“I have the power to knock him out and the stamina to keep pushing him back. But if an opportunity presents itself to take it to the ground, I’ll take it. That’s what separates well-rounded fighters from those who stick to one approach.”

UFC betting odds reflect expectations of another competitive contest, with du Plessis slightly favoured to repeat his decision victory at odds of +195.

Strickland winning by decision is the next most likely outcome, paying +215, while a knockout victory for du Plessis stands at +400.

Strickland by KO offers long odds of +1000, and submission victories for either fighter are seen as highly improbable.

With du Plessis keen to utilise his complete skill set and Strickland looking to impose his preferred striking game, UFC 312 promises an intriguing clash of styles in Sydney.

Fans and the top MMA sportsbooks are anticipating a closely fought encounter, with du Plessis aiming to solidify his position atop the middleweight division.
