Napoli delivered a stunning comeback victory over Juventus, defeating the Turin side 2-1 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Saturday night in Matchday 22 of Serie A.
The win not only solidified Napoli’s position at the top of the soccer league but also ended Juventus’ 21-game unbeaten run under manager Thiago Motta.
Juventus opened the scoring moments before halftime when Randal Kolo Muani capitalised on a defensive error to slot the ball into the net.
However, Napoli responded with determination in the second half, equalising in the 58th minute through a commanding header by Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa, who met Matteo Politano’s pinpoint cross.
The crucial moment occurred in the 69th minute when Manuel Locatelli, a Juventus midfielder, fouled Scott McTominay inside the box.
Romelu Lukaku confidently converted the ensuing penalty, marking his 200th career goal and securing the victory for Napoli.
The result dashed Juventus’ hopes of completing the season undefeated while showcasing Napoli’s resilience and tactical prowess.
Head coach Antonio Conte commended his squad’s tenacity and preparation, emphasising their ability to overcome adversity.
On the other hand, Juventus manager Thiago Motta acknowledged the impact of a congested schedule on his team’s performance.
With limited time for recovery, Juventus struggled to maintain their momentum in the second half.
Napoli will look to maintain their momentum as they travel to face AS Roma next Sunday in Serie A, while Juventus will shift their focus to the Champions League, where they host Benfica on Wednesday.
The top betting sites have Napoli as slight favourites for their clash against Roma and Juventus as marginal favorites against the Portuguese side.
