Gauff, Andreeva make Madrid Open quarters amid power outage

Madrid Open tennis tournament

No.4 seed Coco Gauff and No.7 seed Mirra Andreeva booked straight-sets triumphs at the 2025 Madrid Open on Monday before a power outage across Spain suspended activity for the day.

While Andreeva defeated Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4, Gauff eased past Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals.

The outage knocked out stadium lighting and line-calling systems at 12:34pm local time, forcing organizers to postpone all remaining matches.

Gauff was finishing her on-court interview after winning when the blackout happened, bringing a sudden end to her reflections.

“I thought it was just us and then I realized it was the whole country — that’s just insane,” she said later.

Andreeva completed her win just moments after the interruption.

“It was 15–40 on my serve,” Andreeva said.

“I was like, ‘Oh, Mirra, please — please — do everything in your power to take this game and finish the match.’”

Matches still underway, including Grigor Dimitrov vs Jacob Fearnley, were suspended immediately. Organizers cited player and spectator safety as the priority when calling off the rest of Monday’s schedule.

The blackout was linked to a fault in the country’s electricity grid and also affected major metro systems, traffic lights, and mobile services across several regions of Spain and neighboring Portugal.

Following the disruption, top tennis betting sites have adjusted the tournament winner market.

Andreeva remains among the favorites to win the title, priced at +550 by Nags.bet, while Gauff’s odds have shortened to +850 after another impressive performance.

Only Aryna Sabalenka (+150) and Iga Swiatek (+250) sit ahead of the pair in outright betting.

Gauff and Andreeva are scheduled to face off again later this week, with their last meeting on clay taking place at Roland Garros in 2023, where the American secured a straight-sets victory.

“The first set was tight, but the rest of the match was like ‘ehhh.’ She did not give me a chance,” Andreeva said of that encounter.

Play is expected to resume on Tuesday, with updated scheduling to be confirmed through official tournament channels.
