Fortune favors the bold, and no football club in recent weeks has epitomized this more than Manchester United.
Much like they did on Wednesday night in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain, the Red Devils will be looking to maintain the same bold approach when they face Arsenal this weekend in the English Premier League.
Thin in options with as many as 10 first teams players either injured or suspended, no one ever gave Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s side a fighting chance in France for the simple reason that it had never been done before.
Manchester United seemed destined to end their Champions League run at the first hurdle of the knock out phase having conceded two unanswered goals at Old Trafford during the first leg, but a special performance in inclement conditions saw the English giants make history in the French capital.
United were gifted with the perfect start, as Romelu Lukaku startled the French champions with a goal after just two minutes into the game. Trying to calm the visitor’s intensive closing down, PSG forced the ball back into their own half where Thilo Kehrer’s blind back pass to Thiago Silva was intercepted by Lukaku, who rounded Gianluigi Buffon before tucking the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle.
Although Thomas Tuchel’s charges were rattled by conceding early on in the encounter, they got themselves back in the driving seat through a Juan Bernat goal in the 12th minute. Coming back from an offside position, Kylian Mbappe whistled the ball across the face of goal from the right channel; allowing Bernat to tap the ball home after Eric Bailly failed to mark the Spaniard’s run.
The visitors nonetheless crowned their resurgence at the half hour mark when Lukaku pounced on a howler by Buffon to rattle the French side. Marcus Rashford unleashed a vicious strike from long range, but the veteran Italian goalkeeper couldn’t hold onto the dipping ball; allowing Lukaku to make it 2-1 to the detriment of the Ligue One champions.
Arguably the most pivotal point of the match came ten minutes before the interval when Bailly, who had endured a dreadful start, was replaced by the adventurous Diogo Dalot.
Even though going ahead became the jolt for United to push for the third goal—given that they were still a goal behind on aggregate—the reticent and accommodating visitors tactically forewent their initial period of exerted pressure. This trick, which PSG fell for ignominiously, proved to be their point of departure, as the French outfit failed to flick on the kill switch during United’s period of hibernation.
Knowing full well that a goal would hoist them to the last eight, United’s plan of unleashing an attacking onslaught during the final ten minutes of the game—seeing as they had nothing to lose—worked to a majestic treat, as France defended Presnel Kimpembe was adjudged by the VAR to have handled the ball when Dalot left fly from outside the box with a right footed shot that seemed to be sailing on target.
Up stepped Marcus Rashford who smashed the ball from the penalty spot to give United a 3-1 victory on the night; sending the English side into the quarterfinals of the Champions League on away goals following an aggregate 3-3 score.
PSG paid a steep price at the business end of the game, as they once again let themselves down despite having a glorious advantage from the first leg.
Arsenal will similarly be in France for their midweek encounter, albeit against Rennes in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16. The Gunners prepared for the encounter by sharing the spoils with Tottenham Hotspur during last weekend’s North London derby.
Aaron Eamsey put the visitors ahead in the 16th minute, but a Harry Kane penalty sixteen minutes from stoppage time ensured the game ended at 1-1.

Manchester United players seem to be taking turns in hitting top form. First it was Paul Pogba who then passed the baton to Rashford and now it’s Lukaku who is flying.
The Belgian striker has been red hot in recent weeks, as he has scored two goals in each of his last three games in all competitions.
With 15 goals in all competitions and a confidence that is over the roof, the United number nine could very well find the back of the net again this Sunday.

Match prediction
Manchester United’s win over PSG was their ninth successive triumph on the road in recent weeks.
Despite giving plenty on their trip to Paris, United should be able to do just enough to uphold their impressive run of two consecutive wins at the Emirates; with their last one being January’s 3-1 win in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.
