Kakamega Homeboyz is set to play host to Mathare United on Sunday afternoon in the Kenyan Premier League.
The Match Week 18 encounter will take place at the Bukhungu Stadium in the culture rich county of Kakamega.
Nicholas Muyoti’s charges head into the encounter with an extra spring in their step after an exultant 6-0 win over Mount Kenya United in last weekend’s Kenyan Premier League tie.
Allan Wanga, who temporarily served as player coach for the better part of last month following the dismissal of head coach Paul Nkata, inspired Homeboyz to victory by netting a brace; a feat which was matched by left winger David Okoth who equally scored two goals to the good in the encounter.
Peter Thiongo and Maxwell Ravel scored a goal apiece to ensure that Homeboyz not only left the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos with maximum points, but also inflicted revenge on Mount Kenya who trounced them 6-1 last season.
Wanga’s sterling strikes in the encounter puts him in a good position to challenge for the KPL golden boot, as it moved him to the very top of the 2018/19 goal scoring charts with eight goals. The 33-year old striker will however have to ward off competition from Sofapaka’s Kasumba Umaru and Ochieng’ Enosh of Ulinzi stars who have both found the back of the net seven times this season.
Umaru took his tally to seven goals a fortnight ago when his strike from 12-yards secured a marginal 1-0 win over Kenya Commercial Bank, whereas Enosh Ochieng’ has been the shining light in an otherwise dark and lull season for Ulinzi Stars; having converted seven out of the eleven goals scored by the 4-time KPL champions this season.
Nicholas Muyoti, formerly of Nzoia Sugar F.C, has enjoyed a relatively comfortable start to life at the Bukhungu; drawing 2-2 with title challengers Sofapaka in his first match in charge before their most recent mauling of Mount Kenya United.
The former Harambee Stars midfielder took over the reins of power from Ugandan tactician Paul Nkata who was relieved of his duties in late January after his name was adversely mentioned in a match fixing scandal.
Mathare United registered their third 0-0 draw in four games when they played host to Western Stima in Nairobi last Saturday. This recent slump could have something to do with the fact that the Mathare players have been on a go slow due to unpaid salaries for the last two month
Match Prediction
Despite kicking off the season in stellar form, one that saw them reign at the top of the league for nearly two month, Mathare United’s title bid has once more been haunted by financial constraints.
One win in their last eight games in the Kenyan premier League has seen the Slum Boys drop to third on 31 points; a point behind Bandari and two points adrift of league leaders Sofapaka.
Kakamega Homeboyz on the other hand have clawed their way back to the top half of the table since the appointment of Muyoti.
Francis Kimazi’s side has developed notoriety for shutting shop when in crisis, but it’s hard seeing the Slum Boys getting anything out of the match against a replenished Kakamega Homeboyz side.
