Round 1 of the 2026 Formula 1 season lands at Albert Park Circuit for the Australian Grand Prix, and it’s George Russell who has delivered the first big statement of the year by taking pole position for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
The race is set to begin at 3pm local time in Melbourne (AEDT) on Sunday, and after a dramatic Saturday session, the season opener already looks set to produce fireworks.
Qualifying at Albert Park produced plenty of headlines. Russell was composed throughout Q3 and delivered when it mattered most, securing pole position and giving Mercedes the perfect launchpad for the first race of the year.
Alongside him on the front row is teammate Kimi Antonelli, who produced one of the drives of the day. The Italian suffered a huge crash during FP3 earlier in the day, but the Mercedes mechanics completed an incredible rebuild in time for qualifying. Antonelli rewarded their efforts with a brilliant lap to secure P2 on the grid.
Starting third is Isack Hadjar for Red Bull Racing, continuing his strong pace around the Melbourne circuit.
The biggest shock of qualifying involved reigning world champion Max Verstappen. The Dutchman crashed during Q1, bringing out an early red flag and ending his session prematurely. With significant damage to the car, Red Bull are expected to make major overnight repairs, meaning Verstappen will likely start the race from the pit lane.
With two Mercedes cars locking out the front row and chaos expected into the tight Turn 1 at Albert Park, the Australian Grand Prix could deliver a dramatic start to the 2026 season.
Ferrari have consistently been one of the strongest teams off the line in recent seasons, and Leclerc is known for his aggressive but controlled starts. If the Ferrari driver can launch well and get ahead of the Mercedes cars into Turn 1, he could control the pace at the front.
Starting on the front row gives Antonelli a huge opportunity. If there’s chaos into Turn 1 and pole sitter George Russell gets caught up or forced out of the race, Antonelli could suddenly find himself leading the Grand Prix. Mercedes have shown strong pace all weekend, and if Antonelli gets clean air early, he has the speed to control the race and take victory.
Starting deep in the middle of the pack at Albert Park can be extremely dangerous, especially heading into the tight Turn 1 braking zone where the field bunches up dramatically. With cars converging from all angles, drivers in the midfield are often the most exposed to contact. Ocon’s position in the pack makes him vulnerable to getting caught in an opening-lap incident and potentially suffering race-ending damage.
