A place in the final of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations will be at stake when Senegal takes on Tunisia on Sunday evening. The encounter will take place at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, with the second semifinal between Algeria and Nigeria set to take place later that evening across the city.

Senegal booked their place in the last four after a thoroughly fought 1-0 win over West African challengers, Benin, on Wednesday evening. The only goal of the quarterfinal bout was the outcome of opposite ends of Merseyside working in tandem, as Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye struck the back of the net after being set up by Sadio Mane of Liverpool – 20 minutes before the final whistle.

Being the first of the four quarterfinal matches, the encounter between Senegal and Benin saw the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee system in the Afcon; something that heavily worked against Mane who had two of his goals ruled for offside. Nevertheless, Aliou Cisse’s charges still clung to victory in a match that saw Benin defender Olivier Verdon sent off in the 82nd minute for a foul on Gueye.

Tunisia assertively booked their ticket to the Afcon semifinals after drubbing minnows Madagascar 3-0 on Thursday night in the Egyptian capital. Forced to a barren draw at the break, the Eagles of Carthage finally came to the fore after the interval; with Ferjani Sassi giving them the lead with a deflected shot in the 52nd minute.

Youssef Msakni doubled the advantage at the half hour mark with his second goal of the tournament, before Naïm Sliti rounded off the thrilling victory with a goal deep into stoppage time. That marked the end of a memorable debut campaign for Madagascar in the Africa Cup of nations; a campaign which they not only upset the odds to finish top of Group B ahead of veterans like Nigeria and Guinea, but also reached the quarterfinals of the competition.

Senegal AFCON 2019 team news

Alfred Gomis will continue to deputize for Edouard Mendy in between the sticks after the Senegalese number one broke his finger ahead of their last group match against Kenya a fortnight ago.
Club Brugge midfielder Krepin Diatta, who scored during Senegal’s 2-0 win in their opening match of the tournament, may only be fit enough for the bench seeing as he carries a knee injury..

Other than Wahbi Khazri’s thigh problem which he seems to have shaken off, there are no serious injury concerns for Tunisia ahead of their semifinal tie with Senegal.

Sadio Mane to score at anytime – +130 at Bovada
Sadio Mane to score/Senegal to win – +225

Having had an impressive 2018/19 campaign with Liverpool, one that saw him score 26 goals and provide 2 assists as Liverpool lifted the Champions League trophy and finished second in the English Premier League, Sadio Mane has seemingly replicated his fine club form while on international duty.

The 27-year old has thus far scored 3 goals and provided an assist in the tournament—something that has him $2.50 on Betin Kenya to win the AFCON Golden Boot.

Mane is Senegal’s most potent attacking threat, and should be able to lead from the front as the West African giants look to secure their first ever Afcon title.

Given the impressive number of top drawer players plying their trade in Europe, it’s no surprise that Senegal have been imperious throughout the tournament. In the five matches that they have played thus far, the Lions of Terange have scored 7 goals while only just letting in one—against Algeria.

Although they have registered a defeat against Algeria in the group stage, Aliou Cissé’s men are still favorites to clinch the trophy at $2.30 on Betin Kenya, whereas the Tunisians ($6.25) have the lowest likelihood of lifting the prestigious crown of all the four teams in the semifinals.

This quite rightly has plenty to do with the fact that the Eagles of Carthage haven’t been as sharp in Egypt—being that their triumph over Madagascar was the first win they churned out in 90 minutes despite playing five matches in the Afcon 2019.

Finalist in the 2002 edition of the competition, the Lions of Teranga look like they have this one in the bag.
