North Carolina legalises sports betting at tribal casinos

Sports betting is now legal in North Carolina, with Governor Roy Cooper signing Bill S 154 into law.

The legislation paves the way for regulated sports gambling at the state’s two tribal casinos, both of which are operated by Caesars Entertainment in conjunction with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

The addition of sports betting to the list of accepted Class III games further strengthens the Cherokee people’s monopoly on gambling in the Tar Heel State.

The new laws only allow for on-site retail sportsbooks, with no provisions for mobile betting.

There is another gambling reform bill in the works that could address online gambling, but local media sources claim that will not move forward until comprehensive research is completed.

Several southern states have now legalised gambling on sports, with North Carolina joining the likes of Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee.

NC also adds to a growing list of east-coast states with sports betting that includes Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York and New Hampshire.
