Houston versus New Orleans NFL Match History & Game Background
The Texans had a tough preseason losing Pro Bowl RB for the season with a knee injury and they sent former #1 pick Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks.
One of the key additions for the Texans was OT Laremy Tunsil and his play will be key for a Houston offensive line that was bad last season and gave up an NFL high 62 sacks.
The Saints lost to the Rams in OT in the NFC title game last season and they have the squad to go far against this season. Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, and Michael Thomas lead a loaded offense and while New Orleans ranked 2nd in the NFL last season in run defense they only ranked 29th in pass defense.
These teams have not faced each other since 2015.
Houston QB DeShaun Watson passed for 4,165 yards last season with 26 TD and nine INT and WR DeAndre Hopkins (1,572 receiving yards) had the 2nd most receiving yards in the NFL. Houston has a good WR corps, but the rushing offense is a concern with the loss of Miler and the duo of Duke Johnson and Carlos Hyde, who combined for 772 rushing yards last season, will take the reps in the backfield and neither was with Houston last season.
Brees faltered a bit down the stretch last season, but still had a solid season. The team has star Michael Thomas and new TE Jared Cook, but the WR corps is still a little thin for the Saints.
Kamara makes New Orleans a much more balanced team in the run game and last season he rushed for 883 yards and had 709 receiving yards. Latavius Murry (578 rushing yards last season) will be the big bruising back with Mark Ingram gone.
Last season Houston’s defense ranked 3rd in the league against the run and only 28th against the pass, so it will be key for them that their pass rush, led by J.J. Watt (16 sacks last season) get to Brees in the backfield.
