Pennsylvania sports betting revenue jumps 144% in September

Pennsylvania sports betting operators almost doubled their wagers in the month of September and the online slots revenue in the state increased by 50%.

Figures recently released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) showed that Pennsylvania’s legally licensed operators took bets in September to the tune of $194.5 million, which is a big increase of 78% from the previous month. This is a big reflection of the NFL season in full swing. Overall betting revenue in Pennsylvania increased a whopping 144% from the previous month to $14.9 million.

Most of the numbers came from online betting channels that reported wagers up 90% to $151.1 million, which is nearly 81% of the total for September. This is about the same split as New Jersey’s numbers for gaming revenue as well. Betting revenue online, which takes out bonus money, was up nearly four times to $9.27 million, while retail wagering increased 41% and revenue increased 58% to a September figure of $5.65 million.

The Valley Forge Casino, which is in partnership with FanDuel, had the highest figures for September with $88.5 million in bets taken. Nearly all of that was wagered online, with the land-based sportsbook taking in $3.4 million. Second place for the month went to SugarHouse with $37.7 million in bets taken, $31.2 million coming through online sports betting. Rivers Casino rounded out third place with a handle of $30.8 million, of which $23.5 million was taken online.

Fox Bet made their much anticipated debut in September in their partnership with the Mount Airy casino and they combined to take in $4.9 million in wagers, which is fifth place for the month. The launch was a little disappointing for Fox Bet, which had hoped for a more lucrative first month in business.

Pennsylvania’s three licensed online casinos had total revenue figures of $5.32 million in September, which is a 55% increase from the previous month. The revenue for online slots in the state almost doubled to $4.42 million and the handle for increased in excess of 50%. The revenue for table games did not change much from August at $900,000 despite a handle of $46.8 million, which is $3 million less than August.

PlaySugarHouse had around half of the slots handle in September to the tune of $47.4 million but had an overall slots revenue of $840,000. Penn National Gaming took in $27.4 million in wagers for the month but had a revenue from slots of $2.8 million. Also, Parx Casino had $18 million in bets placed and had a solid revenue of $740,000. Parx Casino came in first in terms of online table games with $23.6 million in wagers taken and a revenue of almost $506,000.

The Pennsylvania land-based casinos had a slots revenue of $188,400 in September, which was a 4% decrease from September of the previous year. Table games had a decreased figure as well of $70.6 million, which is 2.3% lower than September 2018.

With the football season going on it gave a big boost to the fantasy sports operators in Pennsylvania with an increased revenue of 37.3% to $2.9 million.

For all operations of gaming in Pennsylvania in September Parx Casino had the highest handle of $53.7 million, up 9.3% from August, Wind Creek Bethlehem came in second with $41.1 million, down 3.6% from August, and Rivers Casino came in third with $32.9 million, which was up 10.5% from August.
