Origin Game 1 preview: New South Wales v Queensland

The 2026 State of Origin series starts in Sydney on Wednesday night, with New South Wales looking to make full use of home ground advantage against a Queensland side that has plenty of new pieces in key roles.

The Blues have had to absorb a late halves change, with Mitchell Moses ruled out and Ethan Strange stepping in alongside Nathan Cleary. That takes some polish out of the NSW kicking game, but it does not change the bigger picture too much. This Blues side still has the stronger middle rotation, plenty of strike out wide, and enough class around Cleary to control the match if they win the early yardage battle.

Moses being scratched this close to game day is not ideal, but Strange is a strong runner and he will not need to overplay his hand with Cleary steering the side. The Blues still have serious punch through Fonua-Blake, Barnett and Yeo, while the right edge of Staggs and Olakau’atu looks like one of their clearest attacking paths.

Queensland have a dangerous spine with Ponga, Munster, Walker and Grant, but there is still a new-look feel to this side. Walker gets his first Origin start in the halves, Plath starts at lock, and Jojo Fifita is another fresh face on the wing. The Maroons have enough talent to trouble NSW, but they will need to handle the early physical pressure and avoid giving Cleary repeat sets in greasy conditions.
