Formula 1 race-day picks for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix

Qualifying is complete for the 2026 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, and Lando Norris will start from pole position after a sharp Q3 lap at the Hungaroring.

Norris was quickest when it mattered, beating Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc on the timesheets. But the grid has changed after qualifying, with Hamilton handed a three-place penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri, which promotes Leclerc to P2 and Piastri to P3 for Sunday’s race.

Kimi Antonelli also picked up a penalty in what feels like a very harsh call. He clearly slowed down under yellows after Max Verstappen went off at the final corner, yet he has still been pushed back on the grid. That makes his race much harder, especially at a track where overtaking is already a nightmare.

The adjusted grid makes this race very interesting. Norris has pole, but Hungary has not always been kind to pole-sitters, and Piastri now starts close enough from third to turn this into a genuine McLaren opportunity. Ferrari also has Leclerc on the front row, while Hamilton will need to recover from his penalty and make strategy work from further back.

Further down the order, Arvid Lindblad remains a serious top-six threat. VCARB has looked quick again this weekend, and with penalties moving the order around, there is a clear path for him to get into the fight if a couple of the front runners run into trouble.

Norris is the favourite at +125 after taking pole, with Leclerc next at +250 after being promoted onto the front row. Antonelli is still prominent at +450, although his penalty makes the race much tougher than his qualifying pace suggested.

Hamilton is also listed at +450, but his three-place penalty means he will need to work harder than expected. Piastri is the value runner at +1400 from P3, while Verstappen and Russell sit further back in the market at +2500 and +3300.

Hungarian Grand Prix 2026 betting predictions

The penalties have made this a much more interesting betting race than the raw qualifying order first suggested. Norris has pole and deserves respect, but the Hungaroring has a habit of turning clean-looking Sundays into messy strategy races, and Piastri now has a much better launch position from P3.

The other key angle is the top-six fight. Lindblad has looked quick all weekend, and with VCARB carrying strong pace again, he does not need a miracle to get involved. A couple of issues for the front runners could open the door very quickly.

Oscar Piastri to win

Piastri to win at +1400 is the big value play after the penalties. He qualified fifth on the road, but Hamilton’s penalty and Antonelli’s drop mean he starts from P3, which completely changes the shape of his race.

At the Hungaroring, starting near the front is everything. Pole has not looked like an automatic race-winning spot here, and if Norris and Leclerc get caught fighting each other into Turn 1 or through the first stint, Piastri is right there to take advantage. Getting +1400 about a driver starting third feels far too big.

Oscar Piastri podium finish

Piastri for a podium at +250 is also very hard to ignore. He starts P3, has clean air in front of him, and should have the race pace to stay with Norris and Leclerc if McLaren has the same speed it showed in qualifying.

This price feels like it has not fully caught up with the adjusted grid. Piastri does not need chaos to finish on the podium; he simply needs a clean launch and a tidy strategy. At +250, that is insane value for a driver starting on the second row at a track where passing is so difficult.

Arvid Lindblad top-six finish

Lindblad to finish top six at +450 is the place-market play. He starts inside the top 10 and the VCARB has looked very quick again this weekend, which gives him a proper platform to attack the race.

He will still need a few things to go right, but that is exactly why the price is appealing. If one or two front runners get caught out by strategy, penalties, tyre trouble or contact, Lindblad is close enough to pick up the pieces. With the upgraded car looking like a regular points threat, +450 is a strong price for a top-six finish.
