Man United vs Man City EPL betting preview

One of the most anticipated games of the 2019/20 English Premier League season will take place this Sunday when Manchester City make the cross-city trip to Old Trafford for a duel with archrivals Manchester United.

City head into the derby having beaten Aston Villa 2-1 last weekend to lift the EFL Cup, their second piece of silverware for the season after clinching the FA Community Shield back in August.

Despite their success in the domestic cup competitions, Pep Guardiola’s side look to have abdicated their Premier League crown. Although second in the EPL table on 57 points, the Citizens – who have a game in hand – are a staggering 22 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool.

Although out of the title chase, City will still be looking to put their best foot forward as they seek revenge for their shock loss to Man United back in December.

The Red Devils will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they line up for their fourth Manchester derby of the campaign. Despite scoring eight goals in their last two games in the Premier League and UEFA Europa League, they had to settle for a 1-1 with Everton at Goodison Park last weekend.

As much as United are still in the Europa League and FA Cup, Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s biggest priority remains finishing in the top four. The Old Trafford club are currently fifth on the table on 42 points, three points behind Chelsea in fourth and a distant 37 points behind the league leaders.

United would be much closer to a Champions League place had they taken advantage of Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last weekend. Their own deadlock with Everton was the eighth time since November that United have failed to capitalise on the London side dropping points.

With crucial games against City and Tottenham Hotspur in the coming weeks, United simply have to take their chances if they are to climb into the top four.

Daniel James has been ruled out of the derby with a knock picked up in the last Europa League last week, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a doubt after suffering a back problem against Everton.

Axel Tuanzebe and Tim Fosu-Mensah are closing in on a return from various injuries, with Paul Pogba (back) and Marcus Rashford (ankle) both expected to resume training with the first team next weekend.

Kevin De Bruyne is a doubt due to a back injury sustained last weekend, but Aymeric Laporte — whose season has been hampered by injury — will definitely miss the match due to a hamstring issue suffered against Real Madrid last week.

Although Leroy Sane made a cameo appearance for City’s under-23s following a long-term injury layoff, it’s unlikely that Guardiola will rush the forward back to the first team.
