PGA Championship 2020 betting preview

At long last, the first men’s major golf tournament of the year will take place this week when the 2020 PGA Championship kicks off at TPC Harding Park on Thursday, August 6.

We have had to wait more than 12 months since the Open Championship last July, when Shane Lowry claimed a fairytale victory at Royal Portrush.

The Irishman will not have the opportunity to defend that title this year, as the 2020 British Open was cancelled outright due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but he features in a bumper field for this week’s event in San Francisco, California.

The man to beat is Brooks Koepka, who is aiming to become the first player to win three consecutive PGA Championship titles since the tournament switched formats from match play to stroke play in 1958.

He heads the betting at +1000 with Bovada alongside Justin Thomas, who went top of the world golf rankings with his win at the FedEx St Jude Invitational last week.

Rory McIlroy leads the European contingent at +1300 as he looks to end his six-year drought in the majors, while Jon Rahm at +1400 will have plenty of support following his win at the Memorial Tournament last month.

Tiger Woods looms large at +1800, although his tied-40th finish at the Memorial – where he holds the all-time record with five wins – suggests the PGA Championship may have come a little too soon as he prepares for his Masters defence in November.

Jason Day is winless since 2018 but heads the Australian charge at +3300 ahead of Adam Scott (+4500), Marc Leishman (+6600) and Cameron Smith (+25000), all of whom have collected PGA Tour titles this year.

This will be the first time a major tournament has been staged at TPC Harding Park, which previously hosted the 2009 Presidents Cup and the 2015 WGC Cadillac Match Play Championship.

The likes of McIlroy, Woods, Gary Woodland, Sergio Garcia, John Daly and Fred Couples have fared well at the Bay Area course over the years, so we can expect the big bombers and shot shapers to occupy plenty of territory on the leaderboard this week.

Best bets & value picks for 2020 PGA Championship

Brooks Koepka to win

+1000 @ Bovada

Since the start of 2017, Brooks Koepka has won four major titles and finished in the top six on four other occasions. That run includes back-to-back wins in the PGA Championship. He finished tied for second last time out at the St Jude Invitational, so the form is irresistible heading to a course that has a history of favouring big hitters.

Xander Schauffele to finish top 10

+187 @ Bovada

With five top-six finishes in only 12 major starts, Xander Schauffele should feature prominently in every PGA Championship betting guide. The 26-year-old American has the chops to bomb it around TPC Harding Park, while his tied-sixth at TPC Southwind last week capped off a strong preparation for this.

Marc Leishman to finish top 20

+300 @ Bovada

A bit like Koepka, albeit without the trophies, Marc Leishman is one of those players whose best golf seems to come from absolutely nowhere. His form is ordinary, to put it kindly, but the big Aussie has won on the PGA Tour this season – a solid guide for this – and offers great value to clinch his ninth top-20 finish in the majors since 2013.
