UFC Fight Island 7: Max Holloway vs. Calvin Kattar Betting Preview

Max Holloway has lost two straight fights and is in desperate need of a win to turn his momentum around. Calvin Kattar has won two straight fights and could establish himself as a contender with a win in this one. Plenty is on the line for both fighters in the main event of UFC Fight Island 7 this Saturday night.

Max Holloway (21-6-0) was on a 14-fight winning streak in the featherweight division and was UFC Featherweight Champion for over three years before his title reign and winning streak came to an end at the hands of Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 245. Holloway got a rematch against Volkanovski at UFC 251 in July; many fans and experts believe that he won the fight, but the official result was a split decision in Volkanovski’s favor. The former champion has now lost three of his last four fights overall (losing to Dustin Poirier in a lightweight fight in 2019) since going 13-0 across his previous 13 fights.

Calvin Kattar (22-4-0) has won four of his last five fights including two straight wins over Jeremy Stephens and Dan Ige since his last loss against Zabit Magomedsharipov back in November of 2019. Kattar is 6-2 in the UFC with both of his losses coming by way of decision. The losses to Magomedsharipov and Renato Moicano could be a concern coming into this fight as Holloway is the type of patient striker that could follow a similar path to victory that those two did.

Both of these fighters have excellent chins and deep gas tanks. It’s great to see this fight in the main event slot as Holloway and Kattar are both capable of putting on a show for 25 minutes. As far as picking a winner goes, handicapping this fight really boils down to whether or not you believe that Holloway is in the declining stage of his career.

Holloway is just 29 years old, but there is a lot of tread on his tires as he has been in the UFC since 2012 with 23 fights in the promotion. It’s hard to say if Holloway may be past his prime, but all three of his recent losses are forgivable as he went up in weight to fight Poirier and fought well enough to win in his last bout against Volkanovski. Kattar is taking a sharp step up in competition here; look for the former UFC Featherweight Champion to get the job done and to put his name back in the conversation for another title fight with a win.
