Wimbledon men’s quarter-final betting picks – July 7, 2021

The gentlemen’s quarter-finals at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships feature one massive favorite in Novak Djokovic and three others at shorter than -200. Will Wednesday’s action go the favorites’ way, or can an underdog or two break through with an upset?

Denis Shapovalov (-269) vs Karen Khachanov (+229)

This could be a more competitive match than the tennis betting odds would indicate. Denis Shapovalov has had the much easier path to the quarterfinals; since needing five sets to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round, Shapovalov has received a walkover against Pablo Andujar and crushed Andy Murray and Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets. Karen Khachanov defeated Egor Gerasimov and Francis Tiafoe in straight sets before a war against Sebastian Korda in the Round of 16 on Monday that he grinded out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 victory in.

Both of these players have great power and should provide each other with a difficult test. In their one previous meeting, Shapovalov came out on top in a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory in the 2019 Davis Cup Finals in Spain. This feels like a match that will take four or five long sets to find a winner. There is certainly value on the more experienced Khachanov here, but we favor the significantly fresher player in Shapovalov to have more left in the tank down the stretch.

Novak Djokovic (-5000) vs Marton Fucsovics (+1550)

Marton Fucsovics showed off his tenacity in a 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 upset win over Andrey Rublev in the round of 16. Fucsovics is an excellent athlete and one that will fight for every point, traits that will make him easy for fans to root for as an underdog in this spot.

The issue for Fucsovics is that his opponent will not be bothered by some long rallies. Novak Djokovic is an elite returner and is virtually unbeatable by anyone in the world when in top form. Djokovic has picked up three consecutive straight-set victories over Kevin Anderson, Denis Kudla and Christian Garin. The five-time Wimbledon champion is the clear favorite to win this tournament in 2021 and this should be another easy victory for him.

Matteo Berrettini (-341) vs Felix Auger-Aliassime (+286)

Matteo Berrettini and Felix Auger-Aliassime are friends off the court as their girlfriends happen to be cousins. The two quarter-finalists have played in doubles events together as partners, setting the stage for an interesting matchup here as the two friends will be battling for both a spot in the Wimbledon semi-finals and bragging rights as well.

Berrettini has picked up three straight-set wins in a row over Botic van de Zandschulp, Aljaz Bedene, and Ilya Ivashka. Auger-Aliassime will be Berrettini’s first ranked opponent and his toughest test in the tournament thus far. The 20-year-old Auger-Aliassime snapped his personal losing streak against Alexander Zverev with an impressive 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4 win in the round of 16.

Auger-Aliassime is a bit behind Berrettini in talent and experience at this stage in his career. He’ll need to dig deep to find an upset, and that’s going to be tough to do coming off of his five-set war on Monday. Look for a competitive start before Berrettini eventually pulls away.

Roger Federer (-220) vs Hubert Hurkacz (+190)

The 39-year-old Roger Federer continues to defy his age, putting together another strong performance in a 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 straight-sets win over Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round. Federer has had an up-and-down tournament in regards to form, but he hasn’t been in any real danger since the first round and seems to be picking up momentum with his best effort of the week coming in his last match.

Hubert Hurkacz had lost six straight matches coming into Wimbledon. Nobody could have seen his impressive run through the tournament coming; he broke out of his losing streak in style with straight-set victories over Lorenzo Musetti, Marcos Giron, and Alexander Bublik before pulling off a 2-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 upset over Daniil Medvedev. Hurkacz is on a heck of a run and looks poised to capitalize if Federer stumbles, but it’s tough to pick against the eight-time Wimbledon champion on Centre Court in the quarter-finals.
