IT all comes down to this.
Only two teams have been left standing following a topsy turvy season of Major League Baseball and the bookies can’t split them, with both the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals sharing the -110 quote with our friends at Bovada.lv.
The brilliant Royals fell desperately short in last year’s World Series, knocked off in a thrilling seven game arm wrestle with eventual champions the San Francisco Giants.
The Royals are after redemption and to erase a drought that dates back to 1986.
By contrast, the Mets have not featured in a World Series since the year 2000 – 15 years ago – and they haven’t won a World Series since 1985. Can they break their drought?
Either way, one of them will be looked upon favourably by history, while the other will chalk it up as yet another missed opportunity.
When does winning too quickly become a disadvantage?
It would appear in the World Series, that’s where.
The Mets whacked the Chicago Cubs, 4-0, and will have enjoyed a five day siesta when the series finally starts.
You’d think the rest would be an advantage for teams in the World Series, but, unbelievably, the team with the shorter break has won eight of the last nine incarnations of baseball’s big dance.
It’s an intriguing battle between a Mets side that has been practically invincible on the road and a Royals outfit that simply does not lose at Kauffman stadium – they own the third best record of any team during the regular season.
The Mets boast a strong staff of starting pitchers, with right hander Matt Harvey to start the opener in Kansas City, Jacob de Grom going in game two, rookie Noah Syndergaard in game three at New York and left hander Steven Marz in game four.
For the Royals, it will be Edinson Volquez in game one followed by Johnny Cueto in game two, Yordano Ventura in game three and Chris Young in game four.
Perhaps the guy most deserving of them all to be here is the 66 year old Mets boss Terry Collins. It is his first ever World Series.
“It was worth the wait,” Collins said.
“It was worth all the work, to see what it takes.
“So it’s a special moment for me after all these years, when this has been your whole life, to finally get to the ultimate series.
So who is going to win?
World Series winner: Kansas City Royals (-110 with Bovada.lv)
Series correct score: Kansas City Royals win 4-3 (+450 with Bovada.lv)
Ummm, flip a coin?
Look, we’re going with the Royals, but only just. They were beaten by an underdog last year and even thought he odds are even, it feels like they are favourites because of last year’s experience. They need to negate the work of stars Murphy and Cespedes, but the likes of Alcides Escobar Eric Hosmer and a deep bullpen that has the muscle to close games out, the Royals should be able to turn the tables and take it out – in another thriller, mind you, 4-3.
2015 MLB World Series Most Valuable Player predictions
New York Mets
Daniel Murphy (+400 with Bovada.lv)
This post season begins and ends for the Mets with one man – Daniel Murphy. Murphy has put together a playoffs for the ages and the Mets will need him to continue the hot form that has seen him fire off six straight games with at least one home run – an all time record for Major League playoff competition. Murphy comes out of contract at the end of this series and he’s already in line for a mother lode contract, but imaging how much fatter his pay cheque would be if he could bring home the World Series and a finals MVP to boot?
Yoenis Cespedes (+750 with Bovada.lv)
The Mets were good before they welcomed Cespedes into the fold, but they got a whole lot better when the four year pro moved over from Detroit in July. Cespedes likes his round of golf before playing matches and isn’t about to change it up. Talk about guy sticking to routine and not letting the pressure get to him. Murphy calls him a freak of nature. He’s not far wrong. The power this guy hits with is awesome and if he gets going, this could be a short series. Talk about clutch, just ask the Nationals when he was winning the series virtually off his own bat. Probably should be the favourite, but a nice keep safe.
Kansas City Royals
Alcides Escobar (+750)
Hard to go past Escobar as the Royals’ top pick for MVP after the mammoth series he put together in the ALCS. The man at the coal face for Kansas City was at his destructive best against the Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series, going 11 for 23 and getting a lead off hit in the first four games of the series – an all time record. He is one of only two men to have at least 10 hits and five RBIs in ALCS history. He’s only a career .262 hitter, but you wouldn’t know it from the way he’s been going. If he puts together a series in a similar vein against the Mets, his name will be at the forefront of the MVP voters’ minds.
Remember this guy? How could you forget him. Five home runs in October last year, the most of anyone in the playoffs. A big game performer with a massive ticker and the hunger to avenge last year’s loss after the Royals dipped out, despite making it to the World Series for the first time in 29 years. This guy is also running on emotion. The 27 year old lost his mother in August and he says he will be doing it for Connie in this World Series. Some times there something less tangible about MVP awards and maybe an angel in the sky will be watching over Mike and the Royals.
