Men’s, women’s and exotic betting tips for Wimbledon 2016

NOVAK Djokovic completed his career grand slam in Paris and he heads to Wimbledon hunting for a third major title this year.

The Djoker would then only need to claim the US Open later this year to put all four grand slam titles in his trophy cabinet in 2016.

And he is $1.72 with WilliamHill.com.au to be the last man standing at The All England Club.

It is hard to see him being beaten, given the devastating form he has been in in 2016 and the fact that he has won the past two Wimbledon grand slams.

He hardly dropped a set at the French Open, dominating the clay to win the final 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 against perennial bridesmaid, Andy Murray.

Murray is the second favourite with WilliamHill.com.au to win the title at $4 and then it is daylight between him and seven-time winner Roger Federer.

If the Fed Express is ever going to win another grand slam title, odds are it will be in England.

The grass court was once his domain to rule and Wimbledon was the last grand slam he won – now four years ago – in 2012.

Perhaps, at age 34 and with niggling injuries that forced him out of the French Open, he is a spent force, but it would be a brave man to write of the Swiss former World Number One.

Big serving Canadian Milos Raonic ($17) and Federer’s Swiss heir apparent Stanislas Wawrinka ($21) are the other players given hopes in the tournament.

Our Wimbledon men’s pick: Novak Djokovic ($1.72)

It would be remiss of us not to tip Djokovic to win this tournament. The man is the best tennis player on the planet – and perhaps the best ever – and we just wouldn’t be doing our job if we selected someone else over the Serbian superstar. His complete game is at home on the grass courts at the All England Club and, given that Andy Murray finds it almost impossible to beat him and the Fed Express is a shell of his former self, there just does not appear to be any one else on the champ’s level.

Smokey: Nick Kyrgios ($23 with WilliamHill.com.au)

Two years ago, Nick Kyrgios was the young Aussie tennis hopeful no one knew much about. That all changed when he bundled then top rank Rafael Nadal out of Wimbledon in four sets, becoming the first player outside the top 100 to beat a World Number One in 22 years. The then 19-year-old upstart showed great promise and, while his tennis has shone at times, he has made headlines more for his on and off court controversies than his performances. It’s time for the Aussie to stand up. It appears he feels most at home on grass and, while Djokovic might be too big a mountain to climb, what a win it would be if the firebrand could pull it off. It is the shortest he has been for a major title yet. Maybe the bookies know something?

Is Serena Williams on her way down and what happened to Sam Stosur?

The World Number One – and perhaps the greatest female tennis player of all time – had a rare grand slam loss at the French Open, beaten by 22 year old Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in the final, 7-5, 6-4.

She is still the hot $2.50 favourite with WilliamHill.com.au to take out the tournament, but there is not doubt a groundswell of support for the Spanish star ($5.50) , who claimed her first grand slam title in Paris, after losing to Williams in the Wimbledon Final in 2015.

Czech Petra Kvitova is no stranger to success in Wimbledon, having won here in 2014 and, while her form has not stacked up – she was bundled out in the third round at Eastbourne, whacked 6-0 in the third set by Brit Johanna Konta – she is not without her claims at $7.

No other player is in single figures, but former World Number One Victoria Azarenka is always a danger and will be there abouts at $10.

Aussie hopeful Sam Stosur was looking like she might be a value bet at $101 after her stunning one in Paris took her all the way to the French Open semi finals, but her capitulation against Caroline Wozniaki – 6-2, 6-1 – at Eastbourne has dampened her hopes at Wimbledon.

Our Wimbledon women’s pick: Garbine Muguruza ($5.50 with WilliamHill.com.au)

Muguruza was beaten by Williams in last year’s women’s final at Wimbledon, but a lot can change in 12 months. Williams just feels ripe for the picking. Muguruza’s game is said not to suit the clay, but that didn’t matter at Roland Garros. Back on her preferred grass surface, the stunning Spaniard could be just about unstoppable. You simply cannot write Williams off, and it would surprise no one if she won her seventh Wimbledon title, but, unlike the men’s draw, this tournament is not as clear cut as it might have been in past years.
