Tennessee trades star wide receiver A.J. Brown to the Eagles

Unhappy wide receiver A.J. Brown was dealt from the Tennessee Titans to the Philadelphia Eagles during the first round of the NFL Draft last night. He wanted a new contract in Tennessee and it appears they were not willing to pay him. Moments after the trade was announced, the Eagles confirmed a 4 year $100 million contract for their new stud.

He was traded for the 18th and 101st pick in the NFL draft. The Titans immediately picked a new receiver with pick 18 in Treylon Burks from Arkansas and will hope that he has an immediate impact.

Regardless, A.J. Brown is considered one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Despite an injury riddled season last year, he almost cleared 1,000 yards in only 13 games. He had over 1,000 yards in both his rookie and sophomore season in the NFL.

A.J. Brown is a physical freak who can make extraordinary catches look routine. Beyond his great hands, he is able to break tackles and produce yards after the catch at an elite level. Though he has only played three seasons in the NFL, he is already a top 10 wide receiver and will immediately help the Eagles offense.

Now, he will line up opposite the Eagles’ first round pick last year, Devonta Smith. Both of these receivers, and tight end Dallas Goedert, will make life way easier for QB Jalen Hurts. Hurts is an interesting player. He is extremely talented scrambling but has struggled with arm accuracy. A guy like A.J. Brown, who is great at making contested catches, will do wonders for Hurts.

However, if Hurts fails, it will probably be his last season with the Eagles. They were rumored to be looking to replace him but decided to give the former second rounder a third year of starting. It could be his last chance.

That being said, Hurts will be surrounded by elite pass catchers and has the best supporting cast he’s ever had. Both Smith and Brown are very young wide receivers and have already flashed game breaking potential.

Bovada has the Eagles at +2800 to win the super bowl and while they are destined for a playoff run, those odds are a little too low. If Hurts makes a huge jump with his new receiver, then this number will be a steal but Hurts hasn’t shown any signs of consistent accuracy when throwing the ball. This trade makes the Eagles better, but not a true Super Bowl contender.

The Titans, on the other hand, were a one seed in last year’s playoffs before losing to the Bengals on a last second field goal. They will feel they can compete but this trade hurts their offense. They didn’t feel Brown was worth the money and drafted his replacement on a cheaper contract. Burks could be a good player, but it would be shocking for him to immediately match Brown’s impact.

The Titans are currently +2800 with Bovada to win next year’s Super Bowl and while they may be in the mix, they don’t stack up to the true contenders. Even last year as the one seed, they were doubted and didn’t win a playoff game. Losing Brown will hurt them and it makes betting on them not worth it at this point. They may have a good regular season, but quarterback Ryan Tannehill hasn’t shown any consistency in the playoffs and they may be destined for a similar fate to last year.

This is a big trade in the NFL landscape but neither of these teams are worth betting on. Maybe the Eagles will come out and light the world on fire with help from Brown, but we are not counting on it. It’s best to save your money at this point.
