Rashford in, Benzema and Reus miss out on final Euro 2016 squads

BOTH Marcus Rashford and Daniel Sturridge have made England’s final squad for the 2016 European Championships.

With the striking talents of Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Wayne Rooney certain to feature on Roy Hodgson’s 23-man roster, Rashford was expected to be the odd man out.

However, an impressive international debut in the 2-1 friendly win over Australia was enough for the Manchester United teenager to book a spot in France.

It was thought Sturridge wouldn’t make the squad if Rashford was picked, but Hodgson has stuck by the Liverpool man despite his lingering fitness concerns.

Not heading across the channel are Fabian Delph, Andros Townsend and Danny Drinkwater, the latter of whom was an integral part of Leicester City’s shock Premier League triumph.

Host nation France remain $4 favourites in the Euro 2016 outright betting at Sportsbet.com.au despite a string of late changes.

Raphael Varane, Lassana Diarra and Jeremy Mathieu are all out with injury, while Mamadou Sakho was dropped after serving a 30-day provisional ban for a failed drug test.

In are Man United’s Morgan Schneiderlin, Sevilla’s Adil Rami and Lyon’s Samuel Umtiti.

Karim Benzema has not taken his exclusion quietly, citing racism as the reason for France coach Didier Deschamps’ decision.

The Real Madrid striker was removed from consideration due to his alleged attempts to blackmail Lyon midfielder Mathieu Valbuena, who was also left out.

But Benzema has echoed former France star Eric Cantona’s view that Deschamps conceded to right-wing political agendas by snubbing him and Hatem Ben Arfa, both of whom are of African descent.

“He has bowed to the pressure of a racist part of France,” he told the Spanish press.

“He has to know that in France the extremist party reached the second round in the last two elections.

“I do not know, therefore, whether it is a decision only for Didier because I’ve gotten along with him, with the president, everyone.”

Benzema isn’t the only Madrid-based star who will be watching the Euros from afar this summer.

Both Saul Niguez and Isco were among the casualties as Vicente del Bosque announced Spain’s final 23, while Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin was called up to replace the injured Dani Carvajal.

Meanwhile, Germany coach Joachim Low cited ongoing fitness issues as the reason behind the surprise omission of Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus, who was rated a $34 chance at Sportsbet to top score for the tournament.

“The medical staff could not give a clear prognosis for Marco,” Low told the media.

“He has massive injury problems and the medical staff was very sceptical about his ability to last through the coming weeks and such a gruelling tournament.

“It is a bitter decision and bitter for Marco.”

There was much better news for veteran forward Robbie Keane, who was included in Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland squad, while Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley was named for Wales after making a miraculous recovery from a broken leg.
