Cleveland Cavaliers ($1.08) vs. Philadelphia 76ers ($8.75)

How good is Jahlil Okafor? Forget the eight turnovers, that can happen with rookie big men, the beast has as good an offensive game around the rim as any that has come into the league in recent years. And it was all on display in his first tip off against the Boston Celtics, where he dropped 26 points on 10 of 16 shooting, to go with seven boards and a couple of blocks. This guy, along with Nerlens Noel, is the future in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, this is not the future, and the present day 76ers are no good. Title favourites Lebron James, Kevin Love and their Cleveland Cavaliers company should have no problems dealing with them in this one.

Milwaukee Bucks ($1.99) vs. Brooklyn Nets ($1.86)

The Bucks have been hurt by injury in the early going, while the Nets have been ravaged by being no good. They went 0-8 from the three point line against the Bulls in the season opener, the first time in franchise history they’ve failed to make a three. That’s all time futility and it’s translating on the court. Remember when they snared Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce from the Celtics, Joe Johnson from the Hawks and then added Deron Williams to that mix? They were talking titles. Not any more. They’re talking number one draft picks and that means we’re predicting a Milwaukee Bucks win on the road, with the Greek Freak Giannis Antetokounmpo dominate. Add the work of tall point guard Michael Carter-Williams and off season acquisition Greg Monroe and you have a side that is well and truly on the way to be a contender in the East.

San Antonio Spurs ($1.30) vs. New York Knicks ($3.70)

We use the term “marquee match up” loosely on this one, but there’s just something about the Knicks in 2015. Rookie Kristaps Porzingas is a 7-3 man mountain, but he moves like a small forward and that quick release is to die for. Robin Lopez has been controlling the paint for the Knicks and Derrick Williams might yet justify his draft selection (probably not, but he has been balling). If rookie Jerian Grant isn’t starting in a month we’ll be very surprised, he’s shown plenty more than the corpse of Jose Calderon and they should hand this kid the keys. Mello, of course, is Mello, high production, low percentage and Langston Gallowy has also continued on from where he left off as a solid role playing scorer for the Knicks. Of course, they’re probably not going to win against a stacked San Antonio Spurs outfit that no longer possesses a ‘Big Three’. The days of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili have well and truly passed, but they have a ‘Big Two’ now in Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge that is as good as any combo in the league. Leonard has started particularly well. He is the leader of this team on both ends of the floor and will surely not allow his team to lose. On paper, you’d expect a big Spurs win, but it’s often different on the floor and we think the Knicks can hang in long enough to at least cover the line.

Oklahoma City Thunder ($1.76) vs. Houston Rockets ($2.11)

Probably the match up of the day. Ex Thunder man James Harden welcomes his former team mates Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and company to Houston for a clash between two sides who would have designs on the 2016 NBA title. The Thunder have welcomed Durant back to the fold after he missed most of last season with injury and he hasn’t disappointed, bringing back that one two scoring punch with the lightning quick Westbrook. Enes Kanter has been dominating the boards and Serge Ibaka has been dynamite on the defensive end, while still proving his credentials as one of the best spot up shooting big men in the game. The Rockets rely heavily on Harden to provide their offence, but there is talent across the board that can compete with any side in this league. Big man Dwight Howard is not what he once was, but still has the ability to dominate on his day and the signing of Ty Lawson to run the offence should be a real boon for the boys in Houston. We think it’s tough to go to Houston win, but the Thunder buddies should be good enough to keep it close and hold the line.

Portland Trail Blazers ($2.88) vs. Minnesota Timberwolves ($1.44)

Portland is a team in transition, led by Damian Lillard and surprise scoring machine CJ McCollum. After losing superstar LaMarcus Aldridge in the off season, we can’t see them winning a whole lot, but Lillard at least makes them a fun team to watch. We just wish he had as much commitment on the defensive end as he does on the offensive end. The match up with Lillard gives the Wolves’ Spanish star point guard Ricky Rubio the opportunity to continue his development against someone he should be able to have his way with in attack. People forget he’s still only 25 and, due to so much missed basketball because of injury, he is still yet to reach the peak of his craft. Rubio is the gun that feeds an up and coming cast led by the past two number one draft picks Karl Anthony-Towns and Andrew Wiggins. We’re backing the Wolves to get the job done at home.

Memphis Grizzlies ($4.65) vs. Golden State Warriors ($1.21)

The reigning NBA champion Golden State Warriors picked up where they left off in the season opener, League Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry shooting the lights out, dropping 24 points in the first quarter of the season. If that’s a sign of things to come, both he and the Warriors could go back to back long term, but in the short term they should have no drama handling the Memphis Grizzlies. Two year’s ago, the Grizz were looking like genuine title contenders, but we feel like there’s a sameness about this side that will hinder it in 2015-16. Marc Gasol is among the premier big men in the game and Zach Randolph and Mike Conley still do their thing, but that has only ever added up to 50 wins and mid round exits for the boys from Memphis.

Phoenix Suns ($5) vs. Los Angeles Clippers ($1.19)

This one has the potential to be a bit of a stinker. The ridiculously stacked Los Angeles Clippers up against the rag tag bunch of misfits from Phoenix. LA literally has 10 guys who would all be starters at many other clubs and it appears the only barrier to success is keeping them happy – something that’s very hard to do when there are so many ego driven mouths to feed. Regardless, Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan and the cast of very classy role players should easily account for the Suns, who rely on their back court of Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight to generate the scoring in an offence that has so far failed to fire in season 2015.
