The American Gaming Association (AGA) is expecting some big numbers for this year’s Super Bowl.
Results of a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult suggest that more than 22 million Americans will wager upwards of $6 billion on next weekend’s title game between the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots.

Despite the rise of legal sports betting markets in various US states over the past year, the survey projected around 1.8 million punters would place bets with either unlicensed local bookies or offshore gambling websites.
“More Americans than ever before will be able to place their bets with legal sportsbooks now operating in eight states, generating valuable revenue for state, local and tribal governments and increasing fan engagement with the game,” said Bill Miller, AGA president and CEO.

“These results, however, also point to the continued viability of the dangerous, illegal sports betting market in America.
“It is more important than ever for jurisdictions to enact sound policies that provide a safe, legal alternative with protections for the nearly 23 million Americans who will place a bet on the big game.”
Some 2,201 American adults took the online survey, which was conducted on January 22, 2019.
Results were weighted to achieve a target sample based on criteria such as age, gender, ethnicity, education and location.
Morning Consult puts the margin of error at +/- 2 per cent overall and slightly larger for sub-groups.
