Manchester City’s chase for a historic quadruple will face a major acid test when they play against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League.
The match, the first of a two legged quarter-final, will see the current Premier League champions play away in the all-English European knockout encounter.
Pep Guardiola’s charges prepared for the bout with a 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion over the weekend; an outcome that saw the Citizens secure their place in the Final of the FA Cup to be held on May 18.
Only a win away from possibly contending for the one domestic trophy that managed to evade him since his arrival in England three years ago, Pep treated the encounter with the gravity that it deserved; fielding out a strong eleven despite having a decisive midweek European encounter.
City, coming in hot and heavy immediately after the first whistle, didn’t have to wait long for their opening salvo which came in the fourth minute through Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian, who hasn’t been able to hold a candle to Sergio Aguero this season, took full advantage of the Argentine’s absence to injury by netting the winning goal in the fourth minute.
True to form, Kevin de Bruyne delivered an exquisitely weighted, inch-perfect cross from the right wing; one that the 22-year old connected with a stooping header to send the Manchester based club into the lead.
A goal scored with such consummate ease in the early exchanges of the game would normally dictate a rout by what is quite rightly the most richly assembled squad on the land, yet City couldn’t find another way past Brighton.
In fact, the Citizens have their lucky stars to thank, as they survived scares that could have completely altered the course of the match. Kyle Walker’s head butting peccadillo in the first half seemed to be waved off after a VAR review following what initially looked like the England international had thrust his head against the face of Alireza Jahanbakhsh, whereas Aymeric Laporte’s timely crossbar clearance from a Glenn Murray effort protected City’s lead.
In the end, Pep Guardiola’s side was able to see out the win in a move that saw them impressively book their second final of the season. The wheels were expected to fall off at some point, since no team in England has ever clinched the quadruple, yet Manchester City have maintained their capacity to challenge this fact; with two months left to the close of European club football.
Playing their first match at their newly launched £1Billion Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Mauricio Pochettino’s charges warmed up to Manchester City’s visit by convincingly brushing aside a tough Crystal Palace team 2-0 in the English Premier League over the weekend.
Although they had endured an edgy 45 minutes, the hosts took the lead ten minutes after the interval through Son Heung-min; the South Korean putting a permanent imprint in the annals of history by scoring the first goal ever in the new stadium.
The Spurs forward let fly from the edge of the area, but the goal sailed into the back of the net thanks to a kind deflection off Luka Milivojevic.
The clutch timing of the second goal, a left-footed strike by Christian Eriksen from close range, is however what made the biggest difference; with the 80th minute goal enough to repel any beliefs of a possible comeback by the visitors.

Sergio Aguero has been on an imperious run of form this season as he has played a hand in 37 goals in all competitions; directly scoring 29 of them himself.
The striker has however sat out the last two games due to a muscle injury that saw him limp off during his side’s 2-0 win over Fulham at the tail end of March.
Despite this, the Argentine forward—who took part in City’s full training at Tottenham’s stadium on Monday—should be able to pick up matters from where he left them off on his return to the starting eleven.
Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City match result prediction
Manchester City is a team nonchalantly flirting with history. Guardiola’s boys already secured the EFL Cup back in February, have an FA Cup final tie against Watford, are well on course to retain the Premier League crown should they ward off Liverpool, and are equally strong favorites in the Champions League.
Spurs, who have only won one of their last five games across the board, will unequivocally be pressing forward and hoping for a win in what is their first European encounter at their new stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s Citizens, who have only lost once this year, are nonetheless too good for the Londoners.
