Wimbledon 2024 men’s final preview: Alcaraz v Djokovic
Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. It’s the match everyone wanted to see this Sunday, and it’s come to fruition.
The world No.2 and No.3 clash in a repeat of last year’s championship match, which lasted for almost five hours. Alcaraz prevailed in a fifth set, handing Djokovic his only Grand Slam loss of the season.
Now, we have a rematch, and tennis bookies can barely decide who is favourite.
Alcaraz has had the tougher path of the two to make the final.
The young Spaniard raced through his first two matches at Wimbledon in straight sets, defeating qualifier Mark Lajal and Aussie Aleksandar Vukic. Since then, though, the third seed has had to work hard for his progress.
A five-set match in the third round saw Alcaraz escape against America’s Frances Tiafoe. Then, sets were dropped against both Ugo Humbert and Tommy Paul.
Most recently, the defending champion had to come from behind to see off the wily Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals, prevailing in four sets.
Djokovic, on the other hand, has been gifted a straightforward path to the championship match.
He also won his opener in straight sets against a qualifier, dispatching Vit Kopriva for the loss of five games. A slight wobble saw him drop sets to wildcard Jacob Fearnley and Australian Alexei Popyrin in the second and third rounds, respectively.
Since then, however, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has been locked in.
His round-of-16 clash against Holger Rune was over in a flash, before Alex de Minaur withdrew from their quarter-final to hand Djokovic a walkover into the semi-finals.
There, he faced Lorenzo Musetti, who had never made it this far in a major before. Djokovic, playing in his 49th Grand Slam semi-final, dealt to the Italian efficiently, booking his spot in the final in straight sets.

Alcaraz v Djokovic Wimbledon final predictions
This is a career-defining moment for Djokovic.
Either he loses to Alcaraz for the second year in a row in the Wimbledon final and takes one step towards retirement (he has always said that once the young guys can beat him consistently, he will step aside).
Or he gains revenge for last year’s loss, winning an eighth Wimbledon to equal Roger Federer’s record and bagging a 25th Grand Slam title to go ahead of Margaret Court on the all-time list. All this, a month after knee surgery.
Leading sports bookmakers have Alcaraz as the $1.67 favourite to win, but our Alcaraz vs Djokovic prediction is that it will be the latter.
Time and time again, Djokovic has stood up when the pressure is greatest and made a name for himself.
We do not see him missing the opportunity to do so once more and assert his dominance over the next generation.
