Alexander Volkov cries foul over loss to Ciryl Gane at UFC 310
Alexander Volkov is furious after his loss to Ciryl Gane, claiming the split decision awarded against him at UFC 310 on Saturday was wrong.
The Russian heavyweight was a +290 underdog across MMA betting sites for the clash in Las Vegas, but he held his own in the rematch of their 2021 bout.
It seemed as though Volkov had done enough to win rounds two and three; however, only one judge awarded him the fight, 29-28, while the other two went against him by the same score.
“It was a bullshit decision, for sure,” Volkov said in the post-fight press conference.
“I don’t know what we’re going to do with the decision, I’m absolutely sure that I won the fight.
“I did much more than Gane in all the fight.
“I do not know who scored this fight with him, who are the judges, how they decide this.
“I don’t see any damage from him to me and I don’t understand why he won the fight.”
Volkov added that even Gane and his team were not convinced he had won the bout.
“I saw the eyes of his team, and they didn’t expect this,” he said.
“They didn’t expect the decision, and he was upset, so my respect to Ciryl Gane.
“He wasn’t like a guy who just walked out from the cage after the decision, because he didn’t feel this, too.
“Nothing bad to my opponent, I just don’t accept with the commission. I can’t agree with this.”
Gane explained afterwards that it was a tight clash, and that he left the octagon to get treatment for several broken toes suffered in the first round.
“It was really tight,” Gane said.
“He did a really good job.
“I know I put him in some situations in danger. I’m not happy about the fight.
“I broke my toes in the first second of the fight.
“I’m not happy about the fight. I’m happy about the decision. I worked a lot. I’m not happy about this fight.
“I got the win but I’m not happy.”
Volkov stated that he intends to formally appeal the decision and had spoken to UFC CEO Dana White, who agreed he was hard done by.
