Alvarez fires back at McGregor over contract jibes

UFC legend Conor McGregor

Amidst heavy contract demands by boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez, UFC star Conor McGregor took to social media to mock the Mexican’s requirements this Wednesday.

As Alvarez wants a whopping $200 million for his potential bout with David Benavidez, the two fighters have started a verbal war ahead of Alvarez’s clash with Edgar Berlanga on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Saudi Arabian entertainment chief Turki Alshikh has rejected the upcoming Alvarez fight in favour of sponsoring UFC 306.

He posted on his X account to break the news, and McGregor took the opportunity to mock the Mexican superstar.

“Canelo is a cornflake,” McGregor wrote in his tweet, which he later deleted.

“He has about 300k buys in him.

“He does not generate nothing near what he seeks to be paid.

“UFC NOCHE is going to run them from the strip.

“Sheik Turki was right moving on.

“CANELO DOESN’T SELL.”

Alvarez, who is the undisputed super middleweight champion, has hit back at McGregor’s latest taunts, delivering a short but sharp response during an interview on Wednesday.

“What’s happening is that he’s helping Dana White to sell for the UFC,” he said.

“That’s why he’s saying that, but he knows he’s my son.”

Alvarez is the heavy favourite to beat Berlanga, paying -1428.57 at boxing bookmakers. The American is a +870 underdog.

The Mexican has rebounded from his 2022 defeat at the hands of Dmitry Bivol with four consecutive wins, most recently defeating Jaime Munguia in May to defend his super middleweight title.

On the other hand, McGregor suffered a toe injury and was forced to cancel his UFC 303 fight with Michael Chandler.

As yet, there is no date confirmed for the 36-year-old’s return to the octagon.

Before the injury announcement, McGregor (-105.26) was a slight underdog for his fight with Chandler (-114.94).
