Arsenal v Leicester City

Arsenal will welcome Leicester City to the Emirates on Monday night in what will be the last piece of action for Match Week 9 of the English Premier League.

Unai Emery will be hoping for another incisive performance to keep up the purple patch that has seen his side churn out nine successive wins in all competitions.

Their most recent outing ended in a 5-1 capitulation of Fulham in the last weekend before the start of October’s international break. The hosts managed to keep Arsenal at bay during the opening exchanges, but the Gunners gradually grew into the game, as they found their opening goal at the half hour mark.

Alexandre Lacazette was the man to put Arsenal in front, as the Frenchman controlled Nacho Monreal’s cutback before spinning and stabbing the ball past Marcus Bettinelli and into the back of the net.

Andre Schurrle however ensured that Fulham went into the break on level terms with a finish that oozed of German efficiency. Luciano Vietto pounced on a slack ball by Nacho Monreal before threading it to Schurrle who cheekily dinked it over Bernd Leno to hoist the hosts right back in the thick of things.

The Gunners however regained the lead four minutes after the restart through Lacazette, albeit fortuitously after the forward’s long range effort found its way into the bottom corner having caught the Fulham keeper by surprise.

Aaron Ramsey, who came off the bench in the 67th minute, set up the healthy lead with Arsenal’s third through an intricate flick; a goal scored just 39 seconds after the Welshman made his way to the turf.

Even though the contest had already been decided midway through the second half, the visitors still shifted through the gears with little relent; Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang getting in among the goal scoring act eleven minutes to stoppage time.

Arsenal’s scourge in the London derby was completed at the tail end of the match when the Gabon international capped off the imposing performance with a low finish for his second of the day.

It was a truly memorable outing for Unai Emery’s charges at Craven Cottage, as the Gunners won their ninth successive game in all competitions – a feat they last attained in 2015.

The victory is quite indicative of what to expect this season, as it hoisted Arsenal to the last Champions League qualification spot on 18 points, just two points behind Liverpool, Chelsea and leaders Manchester City who are all level on 20 points.

Leicester City on the other hand went for the international break with the agony of a 2-1 defeat to Everton. The visitors took the early initiative and scored in the seventh minute through Richarlison. The Brazilian marked his first Premier League start since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in the English summer with a well struck volley from close range.

Ricardo Pereira however scored a well deserved equalizer for the Foxes after a well worked team effort that came from an Everton corner.

The course of the match nonetheless took a different twist when Wes Morgan received his second booking in a span of 20 minutes for a foul on Richarlison – worryingly making it the second time the Leicester City skipper has been sent off in three League games.

Try as they did, the Foxes couldn’t salvage anything from the match, as they were condemned to defeat courtesy of Gylfi Sigurdsson who bent a spectacular effort into the top corner from 25 yards.

The win elevated Marco Silva’s side to eleventh on the log and further drew them level on 12 points with Leicester, albeit a place behind the Foxes on goal difference.

Defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos is a doubt for Arsenal’s clash with Leicester City after the Greece international suffered what looked like a sprained ankle during his side’s 2-0 defeat to Finland on Monday night.

Danny Welbeck and Petr Cech will continue with their hamstring assessment at London Colney where a decision over their availability will be made before the end of the week.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who has been sidelined since fracturing his leg during the 2-0 loss to Manchester City on the opening day of the season, is back in contention; as is Mesut Ozil who was ruled out of the win at Fulham due to a back spasm.

Leicester will be without captain Wes Morgan as he begins to serve a two-game suspension for his second red card of the season, even as Matty James and Demarai Gray continue to make progress as they bid to return from injury.
