THERE are plenty of betting options available for the Rugby World Cup final on Sunday morning, but the other markets don’t give punters the chance to win big like the First Try Scorer option.
Picking the first player to score a try isn’t the easiest bet in the world, but there are two positives going for it. The odds are worth the risk – with the lowest odds available on Sunday being Julian Savea at $9 with CrownBet.com.au, and also the excitement factor.
We’ve heard stories from punters which selected Jerome Kaino to score first for the All Blacks last week and they haven’t yet come down from cloud nine. Kaino was paying $26 to score first against South Africa and it’s these kind of bets that make punting even more fun.
There are plenty of players to pick from both sides with the likes of Julian Savea and Nehe Milner-Skudder being popular picks for the All Blacks and the Australian’s are well represented with three-time semi final scorer Adam Ashley-Cooper and the speedy Drew Mitchell.
Australia vs. New Zealand first try scorer market
Australia don’t have any players at single-figure odds and the majority of their players are paying more than the All Blacks.
Adam Ashley-Cooper and Drew Mitchell are the top picks with Ashley-Cooper coming into this game hot after scoring a hat-trick against Argentina in the semi-final.
Israel Folau looks like a value chance at $15. The former NRL and AFL star has had his fair share of injury troubles throughout the tournament, but he’s always a threat and he likes to roam around midfield and get his hands on the ball early.
In the forwards, bookmakers have David Pocock at the shortest odds at $17. The Zimbabwe-born flanker has scored six tries at international level for Australia and he’s the top elect in the forward pack.
Australia first try scorer market:
Adam Ashley-Cooper – $12
Drew Mitchell – $13
Kurtley Beale – $15
Israel Folau – $15
David Pocock – $17
Tevita Kuridrani – $21
Matt Toomua – $21
Matt Giteau – $23
Ben McCalman – $23
Bernard Foley – $23
Michael Hooper – $23
Nick Phipps – $26
Will Genia – $34 at CrownBet.com.au
Scott Fardy – $36
Dean Mumm – $46
Tatafu Polota-Nau – $46
Kane Douglas – $51
Stephen Moore – $51
Rob Simmons – $51
Scott Sio – $67
Greg Holmes – $67
Sekope Kepu – $67
James Slipper – $67
We have highlighted Will Genia who has scored on eight occasions for Australia. If there is any weakness in the All Blacks, they do stand off the breakdown and that could allow the speedy Will Genia to make a dart around the ruck and maul area.
He is nice value at $34.
New Zealand first try scorer odds:
All Black winger Julian Savea is a try-scoring freak and it’s no wonder he is the $9 favourite to score the first try.
Savea started the tournament slowly, but he has warmed up nicely with some of the tries of the tournament and chances are he’ll get a chance to score early in the game on Sunday.
Nehe Milner-Skudder was a controversial inclusion into the All Black Rugby World Cup side, but he’s proven his worth with some scintillating sidesteps and finishing abilities.
His smaller frame is often underestimated by the opposition, but bookmakers haven’t let him slip under their radar, currently $10 at Sportsbet.com.au.
Julian Savea – $9
Nehe Milner-Skudder – $10
Ben Smith – $12
Ma’a Nonu – $15 at Sportsbet.com.au
Aaron Smith – $15
Beauden Barrett – $15
Sonny Bill Williams – $17
Conrad Smith – $19
Kieran Reid – $19
Tawera Kerr-Barlow – $21
Sam Cane – $23
Victor Vito – $23
Richie McCaw – $23
Jerome Kaino – $23
Dane Coles – $26
Dan Carter – $26
Kevin Mealamu – $34
Sam Whitelock – $46
Brodie Retallick – $46
Charlie Faumuina – $56
Owen Franks – $56
Joe Moody – $56
Wyatt Crockett – $56
With so many All Blacks playing their final game, it was tough to select one to end his career in style. Nothing would make All Black fans happier than seeing one of the leaving party scoring first, so we opted with Ma’a Nonu at $15.
The gritty centre has been in good form this tournament and he has become a much more confident ball handler in the midfield. This makes him a dangerous try-scoring threat and we think the value is with him.
Of course punters don’t have to select one or two players. The beauty of the option is that multiple players can be selected and you can come away with a significant profit.
