Brazil is set to take on Mexico in an epic South American derby for a place in the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The match which is scheduled for Monday evening will be hosted at the Samara Arena, with all to play for from both sides.
Mexico secured their place into the knockout phase after finishing second in Group F with six points, albeit with an inferior goal difference to Sweden who won the group. El Tri launched their World Cup bid in the most unconventional way, as they condemned Germany to a 1-0 defeat in their opening match of the tournament, subsequently derailing Joachim Low’s plans of successfully defending the title.
The opening match is by and large the most important one as it not only shapes the group but also helps alleviate the pressure heading into the two remaining pool matches. Mexico’s triumphant victory over Germany inspired them to an emphatic 2-1 win over South Korea; a result that sufficed despite a 3-0 mauling by Sweden in the final match of the group.
The encounter saw little by way of goalmouth action during the opening half, up until the 50th minute when Ludwig Augustinsson smashed the lead having gotten into space at the far post.

Andreas Granqvist doubled the advantage for the Swedes twelve minutes later from the spot, after Hector Moreno was adjudged to have felled Marcus Berg in the area.
Mexico’s clumsy day in the office was summed up by an Edson Alvarez own goal fifteen minutes before the final whistle, although Germany’s shocking 2-0 loss to South Korea ensured safety of the South Americans into the last 16.
For Brazil, a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in their first match of Group E meant they had their work cut out in the remaining two fixtures; a task in which they exceeded and out-vied.
Comfortable wins over Costa Rica and Serbia saw the Selecao book their passage in the round of 16 as group winners with seven points; two points above the Swiss who likewise made it to the knock out phase.
Match prediction
The Russian World Cup has had its own fair share of surprises – some perhaps more than expected. Germany for instance became the fourth consecutive defending champion to be sent packing at the group stage after France, Italy and Spain in the previous three editions, but the biggest shock nonetheless rests in the elimination of Spain, Portugal and Argentina at the last 16.
Although Mexico left plenty to be desired in their loss to Sweden, teams often develop thick skin when it matters the most. Be that as it may, Brazil remain strong favorites in the encounter.
