Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview & betting predictions

The Bundesliga 2021-22 season is set to get underway this Friday as defending champion Bayern Munich visits Monchengladbach in the opening game of Matchday 1. Bayern will be competing for a staggering 10th straight Bundesliga championship this season. Can anyone stop them?

Bundesliga 2021-22 title odds

Bayern Munich (-600)

Bayern possesses one of the best starting 11 in the world. Robert Lewandowski is coming off of a remarkable 41-goal campaign, leading this high-powered attack to 99 goals in 34 Bundesliga contests. Manuel Neuer is one of the world’s best goalkeepers and this club is loaded from top to bottom with superstars even after losing David Alaba, Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez on expiring contracts.

The only potential issue Bayern may have this season is depth, but there is still time for the club to address this during the transfer window. Barring any major injury issues, Bayern’s highly-touted new manager Julian Nagelsmann should be able to pick up right where Hansi Flick left off.

Borussia Dortmund (+700)

Borussia Dortmund is coming off of a disappointing up-and-down season in which the club won 20 games but lost 10, drawing only four matches in league play. Dortmund did reel off seven straight wins to wrap up the regular season and carried that momentum into a DFB Cup victory.

New head coach Marco Rose will try to help BDB find the consistency that it lacked last season. Gregor Kobel was also signed to be the team’s starting goalkeeper in the hopes of bringing more stability to the back end as well. It will be interesting to see what type of impact Rose can have in his first season with Borussia Dortmund.

RB Leipzig (+1000)

RB Leipzig earned a runner-up finish to Bayern Munich last season with a 24-8-7 record, finishing 13 points behind the champions. Leipzig added Andre Silva this offseason who is coming off of a 28-goal campaign with Eintracht Frankfurt.

This club had the best goals against in Bundesliga last season conceding only 32 goals in 24 games. The lack of firepower on offense in 2020-21 prevented RB Leipzig from being a legitimate threat to Bayern Munich, but that hole has been filled with the addition of Silva. Leipzig’s ceiling may not be as high as Dortmund’s, but its floor is higher.

Bundesliga 2021-22 futures betting tips

Outright betting w/o Bayern Munich: RB Leipzig

This prop bet that takes Bayern Munich out of the equation is essentially a two-horse race between RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund (-140). These betting odds do not correctly reflect how close this race is making Dortmund such a considerable favorite. Yes, Dortmund should be better this season, but Leipzig could be too. This is an excellent price on what will likely be a close and competitive race for second place.

To be relegated: Greuther Furth

Greuther Furth earned promotion to Bundesliga for the first time since 2012-13 with last season’s surprising second-place finish in 2. Bundesliga. Last time Greuther Furth was promoted, the promotion only lasted for one season as the club finished in 18th place. Expect a similarly short stay this time around; Greuther had finished no better than eighth place in 2. Bundesliga from 2015 through 2020 and does not have the talent to escape the bottom three this season.
