After kicking off last week, the UEFA Champions League rolls on to Matchday 2. This Tuesday will feature an eight-game slate with a ton of fascinating matchups. Here are our Champions League betting picks for September 13’s games.
Sporting Lisbon vs Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham have had a great start to the season and they took care of Marseille in Matchday 1. Spurs look like they are carrying over their good Premier League start into the Champions League. Tottenham have a ferocious attack featuring Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Richarlison that will prove troubling for teams across Europe, and their hosts this week may struggle to keep up.
Sporting will challenge in this group to advance to the knockout stages, but they are clearly second-best to Tottenham. Sporting had an impressive opening win against last year’s Europa League champions, Eintracht Frankfurt, but this Tottenham side is a different animal. Sporting lost a lot of young defensive talent in the summer transfer window, and that should open up some gaps for Tottenham’s attack. It may be an away game, but Spurs have proven they are battle-tested and they should come away with another win in this contest.
Tottenham Hotspur to win
Spurs anytime goalscorer: Harry Kane
Once again, we don’t know why this line isn’t shorter. Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in the world, while this fixture in Lisbon is one where Spurs should create plenty of scoring chances. Kane did not score in the opening Champions League game for Tottenham, but he has five goals in six Premier League matches. He is a proven finisher and also takes the penalties for Spurs. They have plenty of attacking options, but Kane is the definitive number one and he is always a threat to score. Until this line gets shorter, Kane is a great bet to grab a goal.
Harry Kane anytime goalscorer
Bayern Munich vs Barcelona
Well, this is going to be an unbelievable game. These are two of the biggest clubs in the world and they have had some memorable matches through the years. This year, it’s going to be even better with the added intrigue of Robert Lewandowski leaving Bayern for Barca this past transfer window. But even without Lewandowski, this is Bayern’s game to lose.
Barcelona are a young, ascending team. While this looks like it may be a winnable game for them, they aren’t quite on Bayern’s level yet. They do not have the intelligence and maturity to hang with Bayern at this point in time. While Barcelona have a bunch of creative players, Bayern are so structured as a team and they should use that to frustrate Barcelona’s young bucks. Bayern have a huge advantage at home, and that should prove the difference. This game is must-watch and will feature many notable players, but we are siding with Bayern at home. They are just too good in front of their home fans.
Bayern Munich to win
Bayer Leverkusen vs Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid won a dramatic contest on Matchday 1 that featured three stoppage-time goals. While it wasn’t pretty, Atleti know how to win ugly. Coach Diego Simeone always finds a way to do just enough in these games and they should do that again in this affair. They have the attacking talent in Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann to break down Leverkusen’s backline, and Simeone always puts together a competent defense.
Leverkusen are an ascending team with a bunch of young players who can play at a high level. However, they haven’t proven they can consistently dominate, and because of that, Leverkusen cannot be trusted. They currently only have one win through six Bundesliga games, and while they will likely improve as the season progresses, this is not the spot for them. Even though Leverkusen are at home, Atletico should have the clear possession advantage and dictate the tempo of this game. Although it won’t be an offensive masterclass, the visitors should be able to create enough to dismantle a struggling Leverkusen side.
Atletico Madrid to win
