This Thursday, we are treated to a battle between two superstar quarterbacks as Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs take on Justin Herbert and the Chargers in Week 2 of the 2022 NFL season. After impressive Week 1 victories, it appears like both teams will live up to their offseason hype. The over/under for this game is 54.5, so there should be plenty of fireworks. Here are our best bets for this divisional matchup.
Chargers @ Chiefs spread pick: Kansas City -4
Honestly, there is not a lot to separate these teams. Both squads have unreal offenses led by stud quarterbacks and this game could truly go either way. Also, both teams have a good but not great defense that can get the job done. In this matchup, we are siding with the Chiefs for two reasons. Reason one is the Chiefs have a great home-field advantage and they have some of the best fans in the league. Kansas City are 24-6 at home with Patrick Mahomes under center, and that leads us into our other reason for backing the Chiefs. That is the simple fact that Mahomes is the best QB in the game.
That’s no slight on the Chargers’ Justin Herbert. This is his third season and he has already risen into the elite tier of quarterbacks. Herbert is extremely capable and one of the most impressive passers we have ever seen. But he’s not Mahomes, and that’s alright. Mahomes, on his best day, is unstoppable. This should be a shootout where the offenses reign supreme. In turn, we are picking the Chiefs because, at this point in time, Mahomes is more trustworthy than Herbert and he should prove that this Thursday.
Kansas City Chiefs -4
LA Chargers anytime touchdown pick: Autin Ekeler
This line is substantially shorter than it was last week. Ekeler had a weird Week 1 where he only totaled 72 yards and wasn’t able to find the endzone. However, that shouldn’t continue in this game, as the Chargers running back is one of the best in the league. Last year, Ekeler had 12 rushing touchdowns and eight receiving touchdowns. He is one of the best and most versatile running backs in the NFL and, in turn, he is an elite weapon in the red zone. In a game that should be high scoring, we expect Ekeler to find the endzone. The -135 on offer at Bovada is a great number.
Austin Ekeler anytime touchdown
Patrick Mahomes total rushing yards: Over 19.5
Pat Mahomes has proven he is a capable runner, and that is part of what makes him so good. That being said, he only runs and risks getting hit in close games. Considering we think this will be a tight contest, his rushing over is very appealing. Last week, Mahomes only had five rushing yards, but that was in a game the Chiefs won handily. Mahomes averaged 22.4 rushing yards per game last year and he should have to run more often in this matchup. Also, in each of the Chiefs’ games against the Chargers last year, Mahomes picked up more than 30 yards on the ground. With the line set at 19.5 yards, the over is a good option in this spot.
Patrick Mahomes over 19.5 rushing yards
KC Chiefs anytime touchdown pick: Mike Williams
Mike Williams is a threat to score on any play for the Chargers. The 6’4” wide receiver had nine touchdowns last year, and although he had a disappointing Week 1, he should be in line for more work in this game. The Chargers will be without one of their top targets in Keenan Allen, which should work in Williams’ favor. Williams is basically unstoppable in the red zone due to his size, and as long as Herbert targets him, he is a good bet to score. At +140, we are going to bet on that happening in a game where the Chargers may need to pass in order to keep up with the high-powered Chiefs offense.
