At this point in the NBA season, the NBA Coach of the Year race has simmered down to five candidates. As the NBA regular season slows down to a stop, the conversation for COTY will start to pick up. There are plenty of good bets for the prestigious award and the race may be more open than the odds originally suggest. This NBA season has been a surprise for many teams and guys like Monty Williams and J.B. Bickerstaff are currently leading the race.
As the coach of the best team in the NBA, the Phoenix Suns, Monty Williams is deserving to be frontrunner for coach of the year. The Suns are 49-10 and have no plans to slow down. However, Chris Paul’s injury will change things as many are projecting the Suns to cool off. Monty Williams’s current odds to win Coach of the Year are +300 with Bovada. That does not represent good value and there are better bets on the board. If the Paul injury hinders the Suns, then Monty won’t win and now may be the time to wager against that.
J.B. Bickerstaff of the Cleveland Cavaliers is the next biggest betting favorite, and deservingly so. The Cavs are 35-24 and in a spot where even the most optimistic Cavs fans wouldn’t have dreamt of. Bickerstaff’s odds are +325 and while he deserves to be in the conversation, there are better bets on the board. He has overachieved to this point in the season and if Cleveland falters a little, his odds will drop significantly and he will fall behind a couple other coaches in the race.
One of those coaches is Taylor Jenkins of the Memphis Grizzlies. Casual fans will have no idea who this guy is but he is quietly leading one of the best teams in the league. The Grizz are 41-20 and a lot of that is due to Jenkins. They do not have the most talented roster and outside of Ja Morant, they do not have any stars. Jenkins’ odds are currently +600 and the Grizzlies are the three seed in the East. This is a good value bet because if the Grizz keep ascending and the Suns cool off a bit, Jenkins will get more buzz and close the gap on Monty Williams in the coach of the year race.

Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat is widely considered one of the best coaches in the league. Although he has never won a coach of the year award, this may be his best chance. The Heat are duking it out for the one seed in the East and sit a half game behind the Chicago Bulls. Spoelstra deserves some recognition when it comes to the award and if the Heat get the one seed, he will be one of the stronger candidates. His odds are +700 at this point in time and that is definitely a good bet for a guy who has been underappreciated his whole career. Spoelstra is well liked by the voters, so if the Heat keep it up, +700 odds will be a steal.
The last coach who has a realistic shot of winning the award is Billy Donovan of the Chicago Bulls. Everything said about the Heat also applies to the Bulls. They have been a surprise team and are currently the one seed in the East. For some reason, his +900 odds do not reflect the respect he should be getting. The Bulls have been great all year and while the Heat should finish ahead of the Bulls in the standings, no one should write off this Bulls team. We think Spoelstra is a better bet because the Heat are a better team, but if the Bulls shock the world and continue playing as the one seed, Donovan will be a great bet.
Ultimately, the best betting predictions are Taylor Jenkins and Erik Spoelstra. They are relative longshots but all that needs to happen for them to win would be a little slip up from the Suns. If that happens, you will be pumped to have these futures at their current prices.
