Best bets for Joe Root

Root is a fixture on the top few lines of betting in the major matchday markets at online bookmakers. The question is: which bets are the most likely to return some value?

Top England runscorer: The English batting order is very much a work in progress. None of the rookie batsmen who came in for the ill-fated 2017/18 Ashes tour have survived, while Alastair Cook has hung up the gloves for good. Now, perhaps more than ever, Root is the undisputed go-to guy in the middle order.

Player of the series: If Root is in the mix for top runscorer, then he will certainly come into consideration for player of the series. This is especially the case England are playing at home, or when they are playing a lesser-ranked nation with fewer big names to compete against in the individual stakes.

  • Hailing from the cricketing heartland of South Yorkshire, Root was born with the sport running through his veins. He followed in his father’s footsteps as a teenager by joining Sheffield Collegiate CC – the very place a young Michael Vaughan cut his teeth on the way to starring for England. Joe’s younger brother, Billy Root, plays for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship.

Strong form in the seconds saw Root earn his first professional contract with Yorkshire in 2009. Over the next few years, he cemented a place at the top of the batting order and came to be recognised as one of England’s most promising talents. International honours arrived in 2012, when he made his Test debut in India. Batting at number six, he contributed 73 and 20 not out as the Brits secured an historic series victory in the subcontinent. ODI and T20 caps soon followed.

Root’s well-rounded batting style made him something of a fix-it man during his early days in the England setup. Although an opener by trade at domestic level, he played predominantly in the middle order for his nation until the 2013 Ashes series. Replacing the axed Nick Compton alongside Alastair Cook, Root endured a mixed campaign with some notable highlights – namely the second Test at Lord’s, where he plundered 180 in the second innings and dismissed the established pair of Usman Khawaja and Michael Clarke with his off-breaks.

Fluctuating returns and a lack of stability prevented him from nailing down an England spot until 2014, when he enjoyed a breakout year in both the long and short formats. It was later that year that New Zealand great Martin Crowe dubbed Root one of cricket’s emerging superstars alongside India’s Virat Kohli, Australia’s Steve Smith and NZ’s Kane Williamson.

Like his fellows in the so-called ‘Fab Four’, Root’s leadership is a standout feature of his game. He was named vice-captain ahead of the 2015 Ashes series, where he made 462 runs as England reclaimed the urn. He finished the year as the country’s Test Cricket of the Year and the Limited-Overs Cricketer of the Year. His versatility shone through at the 2016 ICC World T20, where he played a starring role with bat and ball in England’s charge to the final, and in July that year he set a personal best in Test cricket with 254 (followed by 71 not out in the second dig) against Pakistan at Manchester.

After Cook’s resignation as England captain in the wake of a difficult tour of the subcontinent, Root was installed as the full-time Test skipper in February 2017. A few months later, he marked his anointment with 190 against South Africa at Lord’s.
