Liverpool v Chelsea EPL

Liverpool will be hoping to compound the pressure on second place Manchester City by registering a decent result when they face Chelsea this weekend in the English Premier League.

The encounter, which is poised to be staged at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, is only one of two fixtures that could trouble the Reds in the remaining five League matches before the close of the campaign; with the other being Wolverhampton Wanderers at home on the closing day of the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges maintained their imperious run of form by producing a 2-0 win over Porto during the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal. Playing at home, the Reds began the Tuesday night encounter in brilliant form, as they took the lead inside the first five minutes through a goal claimed by Naby Keita.

The Guinea international swung a shot from the edge of the penalty area but the ball instead ricocheted off midfielder Oliver Torres before heading into the back of the net for the Liverpool opener.

Roberto Firmino’s goal in the 26th minute may have been one of idyllic simplicity, but it’s the nature of the build up that emphasized the exceptional work being done by Klopp in Melwood.

Jordan Henderson’s glorious pass from the middle of the park split the Porto defensive wide open; allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to cross the ball to Firmino who simply tapped it home from close range.

Liverpool thoroughly imposed their dominance with the second goal, but it was a save made by goalkeeper Alisson moments later that kept the Reds in the contest; preventing Moussa Marega from grabbing a vital away goal that could would have left the tie well and truly open.

The victory not only extended Liverpool’s impressive unbeaten run at Anfield to 21 games in all European competitions, but it also ensured that the 2018 Champions League finalists set one foot in the last four of the competition.

Chelsea climbed to third on the Premier League standing after registering a 2-0 win over West Ham United last weekend. Eden Hazard hogged all the headlines in the London derby by netting a brace in the encounter; further stirring up rumors of a possible move to Real Madrid in the English summer thanks to his latest show of individual brilliance.

Receiving the ball just inside the opposing half, the Belgian forward ambidextrously dribbled his way past five West Ham players before assertively directed the ball into the back of the net for the 24th minute opener.

Confidently dictating play for much of the encounter, the 28-year old beat goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski for the second time in the game; controlling the ball brilliantly before smashing it home from inside the box, deep into stoppage time.

With the result, the Stamford Bridge outfit climbed to third on 66 points; a point above Tottenham Hotspur in fourth and two ahead of Arsenal in fifth. The race for next season’s Champions League places is as nail biting as can be, considering that third placed Chelsea and sixth placed Manchester United are only separated by four points—five games to the end of the season.

Mohamed Salah may not have attained the goal scoring standards that he set last season on his return to the Premier League, but the Egyptian forward has still exhibited some stellar performances this campaign.

The 26-year old has scored 21 goals across the board this season whilst creating a further eight in the process.

Liverpool’s sustained challenge for the Premier League and Champions League crowns has nonetheless got plenty to do with the fact that the Reds have had all kinds of regular goal scorers; from the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita to the attacking duo of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Salah is a seasoned goal scorer and I reckon he will relish making amends for missing a number of open chances against Porto.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Week 34 match results predictions

Liverpool has thus far managed to stay the distance in their bid for the EPL title, whilst still remaining a force to reckon with on the European front.

For Maurizio Sarri however, killing two birds with one stone may prove to be a tough ask, as something will have to give between the Europa League and a top four finish.

Chelsea could on their day troubled the very best of the Premier League, but Liverpool’s regal form should be able to see them squeeze through.
