Everton vs Man United EPL betting preview

Manchester United’s chase for a place in the UEFA Champions League will face a stern test when they travel to Liverpool this weekend to take on Everton in the English Premier League.

Having boosted their morale with a swashbuckling win at Stamford Bridge a fortnight ago, Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s side blitzed past Watford with a 3-0 win last weekend to climb to fifth on the table. With 41 points, United sit a single point ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in sixth and three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Although the Red Devils are potentially already in a Champions League position, given the recent news of Manchester City’s ban from European competitions for the next two years, a top-four finish is still the goal.

Hampered by vital injuries for the most part, Manchester United’s biggest problem this season has been their inconsistency. Nevertheless, with a rejuvenated squad that has been bolstered by the return of several key players, the Old Trafford side are in a decent form ahead of their short trip to Merseyside.

Everton’s unbeaten run of five games came to an end last weekend following their 3-2 defeat to Arsenal in an entertaining see-saw match at the Emirates. The loss saw the Toffees remain 11th on the table on 36 points, five points below Manchester United in fifth.

Quite a number of teams stand to benefit from Manchester City’s misfortunes, Everton being one of them. With the champions banned from European competitions, eighth place in the Premier League could translate to a spot in the Europa League.

This is an impressive turn of events for the Merseyside club, who were languishing in the relegation zone in December. Since the dismissal of manager Marco Silva, the Blues have won six and lost only two of 12 games in the EPL.

Everton team news

Although Everton were boosted by the return of Bernard and Andre Gomes in the defeat to Arsenal, they will still be without the services of Theo Walcott as he works back from a knee injury sustained during the win over Crystal Palace two weeks ago.

Manchester United team news

Axel Tuanzebe has yet to fully recover from a muscle problem, while Paul Pogba will extend his prolonged spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Marcus Rashford will miss the trip to Liverpool with a back injury and Tim Fosu-Mensah is still out after a recent injury setback.

Reserve goalkeeper Lee Grant is projected to miss the next three months with an unspecified injury that required surgery.

There is no doubt that Anthony Martial’s form took a dive after he lost his attacking partner, Marcus Rashford, to a back injury in late January.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a purple patch in recent weeks, however, scoring three goals in his last three games in all competitions.

Having played a direct part in 20 goals for Manchester United this season, Martial is without question United’s biggest attacking threat upfront.

Everton sustained eight defeats in their last 11 Premier League games under Marco Silva, but they have only lost to Manchester City and Arsenal in the EPL under Carlo Ancelotti’s reign.

Going by last weekend’s performance at the Emirates, the well-rested Toffees will trouble a United side who have Europa League duties on Thursday.

Nonetheless, the Red Devils should emerge with a marginal win at Goodison Park given their decent defensive record.
